HMP Brixton

Brixton is the small hilltop prison behind Jebb Avenue, a men’s house of about 800 across five wings, better known lately for The Clink restaurant and a resettlement pitch than for the Victorian scare-stories. It is still a closed prison. You will not walk in because you know someone who ate at The Clink.

A compact south London prison with a public restaurant on site

HMP Brixton, Jebb Avenue, London SW2 5XF. GOV.UK (updated 21 October 2025) lists Governor Mia Wheeler, switchboard 020 8588 6000, and around 800 men on wings A, B, C, D and G. Education is described as People Plus; work includes Bounceback, The Clink Charity and The Clink Bakery.

The Clink restaurant — a public dining room staffed by prisoners training for NVQs — is the detail that makes Brixton unlike Wandsworth. It does not make the visits hall casual. Dress code is strict: GOV.UK explicitly bans sports-team clothing for visitors over 13, ripped jeans, flip-flops, vests and a long list of other kit. Read it. They do turn people away.

Locating a prisoner

Find a prisoner on GOV.UK. Consent required. Brixton is not the automatic first stop after every south London court — Wandsworth still takes a huge share of local reception. Do not book a Brixton slot on a guess.
