HMP Wandsworth

Wandsworth is still the jail south London families mean when they say “he’s gone to Wandsworth.” It is a huge Category B local on Heathfield Road, not a high-security island like Belmarsh, and the sheer size is the first thing that catches people out: reception can swallow a court van and still take until late evening to let someone make that first call.

A Victorian local that still takes south London’s court traffic

HMP Wandsworth sits behind the wall on Heathfield Road, SW18 3HS, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It is run by HM Prison and Probation Service. Governor Andy Davy’s public GOV.UK page (updated 12 August 2026) describes a men’s local of about 1,600 places across five wings — one of the largest closed prisons in western Europe, even if the certified operational capacity moves around with crowding and refurbishment.

People land here from magistrates’ and crown courts across south-west London and beyond: remanded overnight, sentenced and waiting for a transfer, or serving a shortish determinate term. It is not the place for Category A high-risk men (that is Belmarsh’s world) and it is not an open prison. If a solicitor says “local prison, Wandsworth,” they mean this gate, not a generic south London lock-up.

The Independent Monitoring Board and HM Inspectorate of Prisons have written about Wandsworth for years — crowding, maintenance, and the difficulty of running a radial Victorian jail as a modern local. Those reports are about conditions, not a list of who is on which landing. We do not reproduce inmate names.

Finding someone — consent, not a public roster

England and Wales do not publish who is in Wandsworth. Use GOV.UK Find a prisoner with the person’s name and date of birth. HMPPS will only confirm the prison if the prisoner agrees. If they were in court this afternoon, wait until the next working day before you assume the locator is wrong — first night on a five-wing local is slow.

Once you have the prison, you still need the prison number for letters, Email a Prisoner and the send-money service. The prisoner or the solicitor usually has it before the family does. Calling the switchboard (020 8588 4000) and asking “is John Smith with you?” is not how this estate works.

Booking a visit at Wandsworth

Social visits are booked through the national prison-visits service or the Wandsworth booking line on 0300 060 6509. You must already be on the prisoner’s visitor list. At least one visitor has to be 18. GOV.UK’s Wandsworth page, last updated 12 August 2026, states that Friday is not a social-visit day — do not plan a Friday dash from work.

Session times on other days change. We are not going to invent a weekday timetable. Open the official Wandsworth guidance the morning you book and again the morning you travel. PACT runs the visitors’ centre; they are the people who can tell you about lockers, the dress code and whether a family day is on.

Bring the ID HMPPS actually accepts. Arrive early. Wandsworth’s gate process is built for volume, which means it is also built to turn you away if you are late, under-dressed, or carrying a phone into the hall.

Heathfield Road is not “just off the Northern line”

The prison address is Heathfield Road, London SW18 3HS. Wandsworth Town and Earlsfield are the National Rail stations people actually use; buses run along Trinity Road and the surrounding grid. There is no generous visitor car park. If you are driving, assume you will hunt for a paid space in residential streets and still walk to the gate.

Use TfL’s journey planner rather than a pin dropped on “Wandsworth Prison” in a rideshare app — drivers often stop on the wrong side of the wall. Build in time for the visitors’ centre, not just the train.

Contact, money and the first night call

Main telephone: 020 8588 4000. That is a prison switchboard, not a family advice line. For worry about someone’s safety, GOV.UK lists safer-custody routes and the Prisoners’ Families Helpline on 0808 808 2003.

Money goes through the official send-money-to-a-prisoner service. Do not post cash. Email a Prisoner and in-cell PIN phones are the usual remote contact once the first-night call has happened. That first call can be late. If you have heard nothing by the following afternoon, the solicitor or Find a prisoner is more useful than refreshing a news site.
