High security on the Thamesmead marsh, not a generic London jail
HMP Belmarsh stands on Western Way, SE28 0EB, in Thamesmead. GOV.UK lists Jenny Louis as governor and describes a men’s prison of about 726 places plus a High Security Unit. It holds Category A men and also does local reception work for south-east London courts — that double job is why two families can have completely different experiences of “Belmarsh” in the same week.
Next door in the same cluster you will hear Thameside (a private local) and HMP/YOI Isis (young men). Getting those three names straight before you book a visit is the whole game. A taxi that says “the prison in Thamesmead” is not a booking.
Because of the Category A function, security at the gate is heavier than at a typical local. Expect more questions, more searching, and less patience with missing ID. That is the design, not staff being difficult.
You will not get a name off a public board
There is no Belmarsh inmate search. GOV.UK Find a prisoner is the lawful route for England and Wales, and it needs the prisoner’s consent. High-security cases are not a special public exception — if anything, families should expect less chatter, not more.
If the person has just been charged in a high-profile case, journalists will speculate. The locator and the solicitor are still the only two sources that matter.
Visits at Belmarsh
Book through the national prison-visits service or the numbers on GOV.UK’s Belmarsh page. You must be on the visitor list. PACT runs the visitors’ centre — 020 8317 4682 is the number GOV.UK has published for family support at the gate.
GOV.UK lists social visiting across Tuesday to Sunday; we are not reprinting a full grid here because Belmarsh changes slots. Open the official page the day you book. Parking is limited — that is official, not folklore. Plan public transport or a long walk from whatever space you find.
Western Way is a planned trip, not a hop from London Bridge
The address is Western Way, Thamesmead, London SE28 0EB. Abbey Wood station (Elizabeth line and Southeastern) is the usual rail advice; buses cover the last stretch across Thamesmead. It looks close to the river on a map and feels further on a wet Tuesday with a child’s buggy.
Do not confuse the Belmarsh gate with Serco’s Thameside next door or with Isis. Read the sign on the visitors’ centre. If you are going to Isis, you want that page, not this one.
