A contracted local beside a high-security neighbour
HMP Thameside opened in 2012 as a Category B local for adult men, operated by Serco on a Ministry of Justice contract. It sits on Griffin Manor Way, SE28 0FJ, in the same Thamesmead landscape as Belmarsh and Isis. It takes remand and short-sentence men for south-east London. It does not take Belmarsh’s Category A function.
GOV.UK last updated its Thameside guidance in January 2022 and now tells you to use the Thameside Prison site for times, how to book, and how the jail is run. That is the official chain. We are not going to guess a timetable Serco publishes elsewhere.
Same locator as every other English prison
Find a prisoner on GOV.UK still applies. Consent still applies. “He’s in Thamesmead” is not enough — Belmarsh, Thameside and Isis are three establishments. The locator should return the registered prison name. Believe that over a rumour from the dock.
Book on the operator’s instructions, not a copied grid
Because GOV.UK defers to the contractor page for Thameside, treat that page as the live source for slots, ID and the visitors’ centre. The national prison-visits service may still be in play — follow whatever the official Thameside guidance currently says, not a screenshot in a WhatsApp group.
If you arrived at Western Way and the sign says Belmarsh, you are in the wrong queue. Thameside is Griffin Manor Way.
Same neighbourhood as Belmarsh, different gate
Abbey Wood station is the usual rail advice for the cluster. Buses across Thamesmead finish the trip. Give yourself extra time the first visit; the three prisons share a postcode area and not a reception desk.
Questions about HMP Thameside
- Is Thameside run by the Prison Service?
- It is a contracted prison: Serco operates it for HMPPS. Rules still come from the Ministry of Justice framework, but the visit desk is Thameside’s, not Belmarsh’s.
- Why doesn’t this page list visiting hours?
- GOV.UK does not currently host a full Thameside timetable; it points to the prison’s own site. We only copy hours from an official page we have fetched.
