HMP High Down

High Down sits on High Down Lane above Banstead, a Category C men’s prison that London families reach after the person has already been through a local like Wandsworth. It feels like Surrey countryside until the wall appears. It is not a London postcode jail and it is not Downview next door — Downview is women.

Category C on the Sutton / Banstead ridge

HMP High Down, High Down Lane, Sutton SM2 5PJ, is a men’s Category C trainer. Men come here after classification, not usually straight from the van out of Camberwell. The site shares a landscape with HMP Downview (women) and is close enough that a confused taxi will deliver you to the wrong visitors’ centre.

GOV.UK’s High Down page is the source for slots and the governor. We do not reprint an unverified timetable.

After the local prison

If Find a prisoner still says Wandsworth, he has not moved. High Down transfers happen without a family circular. Recheck the locator before you book a Banstead train.

Visits

National prison-visits service plus the High Down GOV.UK page. Banstead and Sutton stations are the rail story; the last mile is a bus or a cab. Do not mix High Down with Downview bookings.

Getting to SM2 5PJ

Trains to Banstead, Belmont or Sutton, then a local bus towards High Down Lane. It is a hill. If you have a buggy, plan for it. Parking exists but fills on popular sessions — official pages beat a Google photo.
