HMP/YOI Feltham

Feltham is the west London young-offender complex off Bedfont Road, a name that still carries more weight in family conversations than almost any other YOI in the country. It is split in public discussion into younger and older units; the only split that matters to a visitor is the one on the booking confirmation.

Not a children’s home and not an adult local

HMP/YOI Feltham sits at Bedfont Road, Feltham TW13 4ND, near Heathrow’s noise but not in a place you casually combine with a Terminal 5 pickup. It holds children and young men under the YOI / young-adult framework — exact age bands shift with policy, so take the GOV.UK Feltham page as the live description, not a memory of Feltham A and B from a documentary.

Safeguarding rules are tighter than at an adult local. Visits can feel more structured. That is the point. It is still not a public register of who is on which unit.

Finding a young person

Find a prisoner on GOV.UK still applies for England and Wales. Youth offending teams and solicitors often know placement before the family website does. Do not ring the switchboard for a roll-call.

Visits

Book through the official Feltham guidance on GOV.UK. Times and unit rules change, especially around education hours. Bring ID. If you are visiting a child, extra adults and extra paperwork are normal. Follow the official list, not a friend’s Feltham visit from 2019.

Feltham station and a bus, not a Heathrow shortcut

Feltham railway station is the usual advice, then a local bus towards East Bedfont / Bedfont Road. Driving looks easy until you meet airport-related traffic. Build in a delay. There is no good reason to tell a rideshare driver “Heathrow prison.”
