Silistra: custody, visits, and how placement works

Silistra Province is the Danube’s Bulgarian end, a river fortress town and a Romanian border, with the Ludogorie inland. It is the far north-east and a full day’s thinking away from Sofia. Treat Силистра as the name on the stamp and Silistra as the English name of the same oblast. GDIN still decides the gate.

Silistra: how this area actually works

The river bank, flat Dobrudzha edge, and a quiet interior. Tutrakan is the other river town. Dobrich, Razgrad, and Ruse. Romania across the Danube. Силистра is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Silistra.

The river, agriculture, and a small city. There is little to scramble a route except the border. The fortress is Roman and medieval. The prison system is modern and Bulgarian. Silistra matters here because it is the Danube fortress town and oblast centre.

Put Tutrakan in the plan for a concrete reason — the other Danube town of the oblast. Dulovo matters here because it is an inland town. The administrative centre is Silistra. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.

Finding someone held in Silistra

Silistra courts serve the oblast. A Romanian town on the opposite bank is not the venue. Confirm GDIN. Do not cross to Călărași’s Romanian institutions because the river looks narrow. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.

A first arrest in Silistra can be followed by a transfer to another oblast if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. GDIN assigns prisons nationally. Sofia Central is the capital institution; Bobov Dol in Kyustendil Province is the high-security name families hear next. An oblast of arrest is not a guarantee of the cell. Put Glavinitsa in the plan for a concrete reason — a small southern town of the oblast.

Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.

Visits and family practicalities

Bulgarian approval only. Then the long road or the river city, as the paper says. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Silistra. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.

Treating Silistra as a suburb of Ruse or of Dobrich. It is its own oblast. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Silistra, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Alfatar matters here because it is a small town toward the interior.

Getting around Silistra

The Danube road and the inland road from Shumen and Razgrad. Long and flat. Limited passenger options. Drive. Varna or Bucharest. Only Varna belongs to a Bulgarian plan.

River fog and summer heat. Distance from Sofia is the larger fact. Save the gate address in Bulgarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Silistra. Romania is across the Danube. ANP is not the authority.

Questions families actually ask

Can I assume the courthouse in Silistra is the place to visit?
No. Confirm GDIN. Do not cross to Călărași’s Romanian institutions because the river looks narrow. Confirm the institution with the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) before you travel.
Is there a public inmate list for Silistra?
the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) does not offer a public name search for Silistra or for Bulgaria as a whole. Use the official contact route on gdin.bg, a lawyer, or the court papers you already hold.
Which document matters most at the gate?
Same-day visits are a common failure, especially if you land and still need to reach a gate outside Silistra. Get approval first, then fix the journey.

oblast · BlagoevgradBlagoevgradБлагоевградBlagoevgrad Province is the south-west, the university town in the Struma valley, and the ski slopes of Bansko. It is a border oblast with North Macedonia and Greece, and a GDIN question rather than a resort question. Official visits are arranged with GDIN, not with the town hall in Blagoevgrad, and gdin.bg does not publish a roster.Open this area →oblast · BurgasBurgasБургасBurgas Province is the southern Black Sea: the port city, Nesebar and Sozopol, and a wide hinterland. Summer visitors think the coast is the oblast. GDIN thinks in institutions, and the coast is not automatically one of them. An arrest recorded in Burgas is the start of a paper trail. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) decides where the person actually sleeps.Open this area →oblast · DobrichDobrichДобричDobrich Province is Dobrudzha, the agricultural north-east, with the coast at Balchik and Kavarna and a Romanian border. It is not Varna, though Varna’s airport is how many people arrive nearby. Treat Добрич as the name on the stamp and Dobrich as the English name of the same oblast. GDIN still decides the gate.Open this area →oblast · GabrovoGabrovoГабровоGabrovo Province is the Balkan range at its most town-like: Gabrovo in the Yantra gorge and Veliko Tarnovo’s neighbour, with Shipka pass above.
