Sliven: how this area actually works
The Karandila rocks above the city, a plain to the south, and the road east toward the sea. Stara Zagora, Yambol, Burgas, and Gabrovo across the mountains. Сливен is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Sliven.
Industry, wine, and the mountain park. Sliven is a working city with a cliff. The rocks are a hike. The hike is not a visit. Sliven matters here because it is the oblast city under the rocks.
Put Nova Zagora in the plan for a concrete reason — the plain town west of Sliven. Kotel matters here because it is a mountain town north of the city. The administrative centre is Sliven. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Sliven
Sliven courts serve the oblast. Burgas is a different coast and a different court. Sliven’s prison is part of the national GDIN map and must be confirmed as the current institution. It is not the Blue Rocks and not Sofia Central by default. The Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.
A first arrest in Sliven can be followed by a transfer to another oblast if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. GDIN assigns prisons nationally. Sofia Central is the capital institution; Bobov Dol in Kyustendil Province is the high-security name families hear next. An oblast of arrest is not a guarantee of the cell. Put Tvarditsa in the plan for a concrete reason — a town toward the Balkan.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Bulgarian prison administration (GDIN), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
GDIN approval for the named gate. The mountain hut is irrelevant. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Sliven. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Continuing to Burgas because the east seemed coastal. Sliven is inland. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Sliven, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Karandila matters here because it is the rock park above Sliven, not a prison.
Getting around Sliven
The road from Stara Zagora and the road toward Burgas. Clear and not mountainous except the park road. Sliven is on the rail map toward the east. Check times before you rely on it. Burgas or Sofia.
Plain heat and a wind off the rocks. Ordinary. Save the gate address in Bulgarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Sliven.
