Azores prisons: Ponta Delgada, island hops, and DGRSP visits

The Azores are an autonomous region of nine mid-Atlantic islands, capital Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. Mainland districts are not this map. DGRSP still runs establishments. There is no public list of names.

Azores: how this area actually works

Ponta Delgada is the working capital on São Miguel. Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira and Horta on Faial are other historic towns, and a hotel by the port can be the wrong island. Police custody is not a visit. DGRSP places people in an establishment that is usually on São Miguel; other islands are a flight, not a bus. The justice site will not search a surname. Ask the lawyer which island and which address are current before you pay for a room because the caldeiras are famous. Sete Cidades is not a gate. This region is not Madeira and not Lisbon, however Portuguese the paperwork looks.

Families treat every Azorean island as one prison because the airline code is PDL. A visit permission for São Miguel does not open Terceira. A mainland transfer to Linhó or to Porto is a different country of travel even though it is the same state. Women and younger people may be placed on the mainland. This page is not a roll of prisoners. If the papers name Funchal, use the Madeira guide. Confirm the week of travel and the inter-island SATA slot. A release to an address in Ribeira Grande or Angra ends the prison visit. The regional government will not add a visitor. Pico is not São Miguel.

Visits need authorisation and identification. This guide copies no timetable. Atlantic weather cancels hops that a Lisbon family treats as optional. Money and parcels follow the rules of that establishment, and parcels to an island have a different clock. If the person moves to the mainland, start again. Islands do not share a visiting room. Use the address on the letter. A postcard of the lakes will not get you through the door, and a hotel on Faial is useless when the establishment is on São Miguel. Read the island before you leave the airport. Lagoa does not share that desk. Confirm the town before you pay today.

Finding someone held in Azores

Confirm the island and the establishment. The Azores are not Madeira and not a Lisbon suburb. There is no public name search.

São Miguel is not Terceira. Match the papers before you book an inter-island hop.

Visits and family practicalities

Follow DGRSP notices for the named establishment. Bring identification. This page lists no hours.

An Azores permission does not open a mainland house. Lawyers use their own route. If the flight is cancelled, only the establishment can move the slot.

Getting around Azores

João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada is the family hub. Other islands use SATA hops with buffers measured in days, not hours. The establishment is not the port. Use official directions.

There is no drive from Lisbon. A hotel in Angra or in Horta is the wrong base when the gate is on São Miguel. Leave margin for Atlantic weather. Read the island twice before you pay, and do not follow a whale-watch map to the gate. Ribeira Grande is not Ponta Delgada. Leave the afternoon clear of Sete Cidades, and keep the permission with the postcode before the last hop. Furnas is not a visiting room. Do not sleep on Terceira because the region looks like one island today. Faial’s marina is not the visit. A hotel in Pico fails when the papers name São Miguel. Leave a spare day, not a spare hour. The caldera is not the gate. Read the region twice before you pay, and do not treat a Lisbon airport layover as an Azores address. Madeira is a different autonomous region.
