Beja district prisons: Alentejo, DGRSP visits, and transfers

Beja district is the hot interior of the Baixo Alentejo, capital Beja. It is not the Algarve coast and not Évora. DGRSP runs establishments. Nobody publishes a list of who is inside.

Beja: how this area actually works

Beja is a small district capital on the plain. Moura, Serpa, Mértola, and Odemira stretch toward the Guadiana and, in Odemira’s case, toward the southwest coast. Families who fly to Faro often assume the whole south is one prison. It is not. Police custody is not a visit. DGRSP may keep someone in the district or move them toward Lisbon or Faro after classification. The justice site will not search a surname. Ask the lawyer which address is current before you book a room in a whitewashed town that is only a photograph. The castle is not a gate. Distances on the plain are longer than they look.

A Faro permission and an Évora permission do not open Beja. Women and younger people may be placed outside this thinly populated district. This page is not a roll of prisoners. If the papers name the Algarve, use the Faro guide. If they name Lisbon, Linhó, or Monsanto, use the Lisbon district guide. Confirm the week of travel. A release to an address in Serpa or Mértola ends the prison plan. The heat is not a reason the gate will wait. Spanish towns across the Guadiana are another country. Mértola is not Beja.

Visits need authorisation and identification. This guide copies no timetable. Empty roads still fail a slot when the bus is infrequent. Money and parcels follow the rules of that establishment. If the person moves to the coast, start again. Municipalities do not share a visiting room. Use the address on the letter. A postcard of Mértola will not get you through the door, and a hotel in a hill village is useless when the establishment is in Beja. Read the street before you leave the station today. Odemira’s coast is a different day from the plain.

Finding someone held in Beja

Confirm the establishment and the town. Beja is not Faro and not Évora. There is no public name search.

Odemira’s coast is not the default gate. Match the papers before you book an Algarve hotel.

Visits and family practicalities

Follow DGRSP notices for the named establishment. Bring identification. This page lists no hours.

A Beja permission does not open Faro. Lawyers use their own route. If the person is moved, rebook before you cross the plain.

Getting around Beja

Beja has a station and a small airfield that is not a family hub. Most visitors come by road from Lisbon or from Faro. The establishment is not the castle square. Use official directions.

Drivers use the IP2 and the roads across the Alentejo. A hotel in Tavira or on the Algarve is the wrong base unless the papers name Faro district. Leave margin for heat and for long gaps between towns. Read the municipality twice before you pay, and do not follow a wine-estate map to the gate. Moura is not Beja. Leave the afternoon clear of the plain’s sightseeing, and keep the permission with the postcode before the last bus. Serpa’s walls are not a visiting room. Do not sleep in Faro because the south looks like one region today. Mértola’s castle and the Guadiana beaches near Vila Real de Santo António are not this district’s gate. Leave a spare hour in the heat. A wine estate in the Alentejo is not the establishment. Read the municipality again before you pay, and do not treat a Faro airport hotel as Beja. The plain is longer than the postcard.
