Danish prisons: Kriminalforsorgen guides, Vestre Fængsel, and family contact

Denmark’s Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalforsorgen) runs a small estate by European standards, but Copenhagen’s Vestre Fængsel still swallows most of the city’s remand traffic. There is no public occupancy board. Families book through the institution that actually holds the person. Denmark’s five regions — Capital, Zealand, Southern Denmark, Central Jutland, North Denmark — are the first-level map.

A compact estate with very different houses

Vestre is the Copenhagen remand jail next to the courts. Statsfængslet Østjylland is a large modern sentenced prison in Jutland. Nyborg and the closed houses on Zealand are another rhythm again. Treating “Danish prison” as one Google result dumps families at the wrong gate.

Remand visits are often shorter and more tightly booked than sentenced visits. Lawyers use a separate desk. We keep those distinctions on each facility page instead of a generic Nordic blurb.

How Denmark is carved up on this site

Denmark (Danmark) is a separate country folder — not a tab on a mixed European roster, and not a US state code. The analogue of a US state here is the first-level unit: Regions. Denmark’s five regions — Capital, Zealand, Southern Denmark, Central Jutland, North Denmark — are the first-level map. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not this hub. Copenhagen is not a synonym for every Sjælland house. Open a region page when you already know the slice of Denmark; stay on this hub when you need the national rules, the official locator, and the list of those units.

Kriminalforsorgen runs arresthuse (remand) and statsfængsler. Vestre Fængsel is the Copenhagen name families know; Jyderup, Nyborg and Enner Mark are other journeys. There is no public occupancy list. Facility articles under /denmark/ are building guides (address, operator, how a visit is booked). They are not who-is-inside tables. If a region has few prison guides, that is coverage on this site, not an empty prison system. Treating Malmö as ‘close enough’ for a Vestre visit, or assuming every Copenhagen arrest stays at Vestre. Sweden is another country URL.

Finding someone held in Denmark

Denmark does not publish a Google-style inmate spreadsheet. Kriminalforsorgen is the named official route (www.kriminalforsorgen.dk/). Ask Kriminalforsorgen or the lawyer. Police custody after a night in town is not yet the prison. A court in Aarhus does not guarantee placement in Central Jutland after sentencing. Denmark does not publish prisoner names. Visit and telephone rules are set per institution and can differ between remand and sentenced wings. Check kriminalforsorgen.dk before you travel.

A US reader used to sheriff websites will type “Denmark inmate search” and find nothing of the kind. That is the law. Court lists, Facebook groups and paid “worldwide jail” products are not Kriminalforsorgen. If the person was remanded overnight, reception can lag; if they were transferred out of the region you had in mind, the old desk is the wrong door. Use the region pages below to stop treating Copenhagen as a synonym for the whole country.

Visits, money and staying in touch

Visiting in Denmark is not a US-style walk-up. Visits are booked with the institution. ID rules are strict. Open prisons are still permission-based. Money and post follow Kriminalforsorgen instructions, not a US commissary app. Where a facility guide on this site quotes hours, they were taken from that establishment’s official page — re-check the day before you travel. This country hub will not invent a national timetable.

Dress codes, dog searches and what you may carry are house rules. Money and remote contact, where they exist, go through the official national channel — not a personal transfer to a cellmate. CPH airport plus Metro or regional train covers the capital; Jutland houses need a different flight into BLL or AAL. The Storebælt bridge is a region change, not a local bus. Ferries to Sweden do not create a Swedish visit booking.

Travel, borders and the wrong-gate problem

CPH airport plus Metro or regional train covers the capital; Jutland houses need a different flight into BLL or AAL. The Storebælt bridge is a region change, not a local bus. Ferries to Sweden do not create a Swedish visit booking. Print the gate address from the official prison page, not from a maps pin that only names Copenhagen or “Danish prison”. Neighbouring countries on this site have their own URLs; a cheaper flight into the next capital is not a visiting permit.

Treating Malmö as ‘close enough’ for a Vestre visit, or assuming every Copenhagen arrest stays at Vestre. Sweden is another country URL. If you only know a town name, match it to a region first, then to a facility guide. Confusing one region of Denmark with another is the most common way to book the wrong visit.

Regions of Denmark — each on its own URL

Denmark is not mixed with the United States or with other European countries. Below is this country’s own first-level map (Regions). Open a unit for a longer article on how custody, visits and travel actually work there. US readers looking for a county inmate spreadsheet will not find one: Denmark does not publish that, and neither do we.

Regions

5 pages, written so Denmark does not collapse into a single mixed list. This is the analogue of opening a US state after you choose the United States.

Prison guides in Denmark

Each page is written for that establishment — address, how families actually locate someone, and how visits work — not a copied country intro.

Questions families actually ask

Can I search Danish inmates by name online?
No public register exists. Contact Kriminalforsorgen or the specific prison. A lawyer on the case can usually confirm placement faster than a cold call.
Does CurrentPrisonList list who is in jail in Denmark today?
No. Denmark pages are geographic and procedural guides. Denmark does not publish prisoner names. Visit and telephone rules are set per institution and can differ between remand and sentenced wings. Check kriminalforsorgen.dk before you travel.
Why does Denmark have Regions instead of one mixed list?
Denmark’s five regions — Capital, Zealand, Southern Denmark, Central Jutland, North Denmark — are the first-level map. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not this hub. Copenhagen is not a synonym for every Sjælland house. Mixing those units would be the same mistake as putting Ohio inmates under California.
How do I visit a prison in Denmark?
Identify the establishment through Kriminalforsorgen or the lawyer, get on the visitor list, and book that house. Visits are booked with the institution. ID rules are strict. Open prisons are still permission-based. Money and post follow Kriminalforsorgen instructions, not a US commissary app. Plan travel via Copenhagen only if the letter actually names a house there — the region pages exist because it often does not.

Other countries

Each country is a separate area of the site so US county rosters, UK prisons and European JVA / maison d’arrêt guides never share a URL.
