España prison guides

Spanish prisons: Instituciones Penitenciarias guides and family visits

Spain’s Secretaría General de Instituciones Penitenciarias runs a large mainland estate plus the Catalan and Basque systems, which are not the same phone number. Soto del Real is not Valdemoro, and Brians is not a Madrid problem. Spain’s first-level map is 17 autonomous communities plus the two autonomous cities conceptually under community pages we publish.

Three administrations, not one Google result

Most of Spain sits under SGIP in the Interior Ministry. Catalonia runs its own prisons (Brians, Quatre Camins, Wad-Ras). The Basque Country has taken over its estate. A family searching “cárcel Madrid” still has to know whether the person went to Soto, Valdemoro, Estremera or Alcalá-Meco.

Visits (comunicaciones) are booked once the prisoner is classified. Bring DNI or passport. Money and parcels follow SGIP (or Catalan) rules, not a US-style lobby kiosk.

How Spain is carved up on this site

Spain (España) is a separate country folder — not a tab on a mixed European roster, and not a US state code. The analogue of a US state here is the first-level unit: Autonomous communities. Spain’s first-level map is 17 autonomous communities plus the two autonomous cities conceptually under community pages we publish. Catalonia and the Basque Country are not SGIP phone numbers. Andalusia is not Madrid. The Canary Islands and Balearics are still this country, with island travel. Open a community page when you already know the slice of Spain; stay on this hub when you need the national rules, the official locator, and the list of those units.

SGIP runs most centros penitenciarios. Catalonia runs Brians, Quatre Camins, Wad-Ras. Euskadi has transferred competences. Soto del Real, Valdemoro, Estremera and Alcalá-Meco are four Madrid-area answers, not one. Facility articles under /spain/ are building guides (address, operator, how a visit is booked). They are not who-is-inside tables. If a community has few prison guides, that is coverage on this site, not an empty prison system. Googling ‘cárcel Madrid’ and visiting the first pin, or using an SGIP form for someone already in Brians. Open the autonomous community first.

Finding someone held in Spain

Spain does not publish a Google-style inmate spreadsheet. Instituciones Penitenciarias (SGIP) is the named official route (www.institucionpenitenciaria.es/). No public list. The centro, the lawyer, or the administration that actually holds the person (SGIP vs Catalan vs Basque). Spain does not publish who is in each centro penitenciario. Catalonia and the Basque Country have transferred competences — use the right administration.

A US reader used to sheriff websites will type “Spain inmate search” and find nothing of the kind. That is the law. Court lists, Facebook groups and paid “worldwide jail” products are not Instituciones Penitenciarias (SGIP). If the person was remanded overnight, reception can lag; if they were transferred out of the community you had in mind, the old desk is the wrong door. Use the community pages below to stop treating Madrid as a synonym for the whole country.

Visits, money and staying in touch

Visiting in Spain is not a US-style walk-up. Comunicaciones are booked after classification. DNI or passport. Money and parcels follow that administration’s rules. A Catalan permit is useless at Soto. Where a facility guide on this site quotes hours, they were taken from that establishment’s official page — re-check the day before you travel. This country hub will not invent a national timetable.

Dress codes, dog searches and what you may carry are house rules. Money and remote contact, where they exist, go through the official national channel — not a personal transfer to a cellmate. MAD, BCN, AGP, BIO and island airports still leave a cercanías or coach leg. Brians is not Barcelona-El Prat. Soto is a north-Madrid road, not Atocha.

Travel, borders and the wrong-gate problem

MAD, BCN, AGP, BIO and island airports still leave a cercanías or coach leg. Brians is not Barcelona-El Prat. Soto is a north-Madrid road, not Atocha. Print the gate address from the official prison page, not from a maps pin that only names Madrid or “Spanish prison”. Neighbouring countries on this site have their own URLs; a cheaper flight into the next capital is not a visiting permit.

Googling ‘cárcel Madrid’ and visiting the first pin, or using an SGIP form for someone already in Brians. Open the autonomous community first. If you only know a town name, match it to a community first, then to a facility guide. Confusing one community of Spain with another is the most common way to book the wrong visit.

Autonomous communities of Spain — each on its own URL

Spain is not mixed with the United States or with other European countries. Below is this country’s own first-level map (Autonomous communities). Open a unit for a longer article on how custody, visits and travel actually work there. US readers looking for a county inmate spreadsheet will not find one: Spain does not publish that, and neither do we.

Autonomous communities

17 pages, written so Spain does not collapse into a single mixed list. This is the analogue of opening a US state after you choose the United States.

Prison guides in Spain

Each page is written for that establishment — address, how families actually locate someone, and how visits work — not a copied country intro.

Questions families actually ask

Can I search Spanish prisoners by name?
No public database. Ask the centro, the lawyer, or SGIP / the Catalan or Basque administration that actually holds the person.
Does CurrentPrisonList list who is in jail in Spain today?
No. Spain pages are geographic and procedural guides. Spain does not publish who is in each centro penitenciario. Catalonia and the Basque Country have transferred competences — use the right administration.
Why does Spain have Autonomous communities instead of one mixed list?
Spain’s first-level map is 17 autonomous communities plus the two autonomous cities conceptually under community pages we publish. Catalonia and the Basque Country are not SGIP phone numbers. Andalusia is not Madrid. The Canary Islands and Balearics are still this country, with island travel. Mixing those units would be the same mistake as putting Ohio inmates under California.
How do I visit a prison in Spain?
Identify the establishment through Instituciones Penitenciarias (SGIP) or the lawyer, get on the visitor list, and book that house. Comunicaciones are booked after classification. DNI or passport. Money and parcels follow that administration’s rules. A Catalan permit is useless at Soto. Plan travel via Madrid only if the letter actually names a house there — the community pages exist because it often does not.

Other countries

Each country is a separate area of the site so US county rosters, UK prisons and European JVA / maison d’arrêt guides never share a URL.
