Extremadura prisons: Mérida, SGIP centros, and family visits

Extremadura is the western community on the Portuguese border, capital Mérida, with Cáceres and Badajoz as the provinces. SGIP runs the centros. Names are not published.

Extremadura: how this area actually works

Mérida is the capital and the seat of the regional institutions. Cáceres and Badajoz are the provincial capitals people actually travel between. SGIP centros serve the courts as state establishments. The Junta de Extremadura does not publish a roll of internos. A person arrested in Badajoz, on the Portuguese river, may be placed in a centre in the community or moved elsewhere in the state estate. Portuguese relatives in Elvas are one bridge away and still in a Spanish process if the centre is Spanish. A Portuguese estabelecimento is DGRSP, a different country. Ask the lawyer which side of the border holds the person. institucionpenitenciaria.es will not search a surname.

Distances inside Extremadura are long and the roads are quieter than Madrid’s ring, which makes people underestimate the day. Plasencia, Don Benito, and Almendralejo are not the capital. A Madrid centro such as Valdemoro is a different community. Andalusian centres to the south are SGIP as well and still not this gate. Women and young people may be placed outside the community. This page is the map. It becomes a plan only after the centre is named. The Roman theatre is not an entrance, and neither is the Portuguese fortress across the Guadiana.

Comunicaciones need authorisation and identification. This guide copies no hours. Summer heat on the plains is severe. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. If the person transfers to Portugal under a legal arrangement, stop using Spanish forms. If the person is released to an address in Cáceres, confirm release. Two provinces do not share one visiting room. Read the postcode, then choose Mérida only if the papers actually put the gate there. Zafra, Plasencia, and Don Benito are not one visiting room. Check which side of the river you need.

Finding someone held in Extremadura

Confirm the centro with SGIP or the lawyer, and confirm the country if the family lives on the Portuguese side. Extremadura is not a detainee list.

Mérida, Cáceres, and Badajoz are different towns. A Portuguese prison is a different system. Match the letterhead.

Visits and family practicalities

Use institucionpenitenciaria.es for a Spanish SGIP centro. Use DGRSP routes only if the person is in Portugal. This page prints no timetable.

Bring DNI or passport. Permissions do not cross the border or cross to another Spanish centre. If the person moves, rebook. Lawyers have their own access.

Getting around Extremadura

Mérida, Cáceres, and Badajoz have rail links that are slower than the AVE corridors farther east. Buses fill the gaps. The centro approach is the official one, not the Roman ruins. Plasencia sits in the north of Cáceres province and needs its own timing.

Madrid and Seville airports are the practical flights, then a long road. Drivers use the A-5 and the A-66. The Portuguese crossing at Badajoz is busy. A hotel in Elvas is in another country. A hotel in Mérida is wrong for a Badajoz gate. Read the province and leave margin for distances that look empty and still take the afternoon. Plasencia, Zafra, and Navalmoral are not Mérida. A Portuguese hotel in Elvas is another country. Navalmoral and Zafra are not Mérida. Leave the whole afternoon for the A-5 if the papers name a distant town. Don Benito and Almendralejo are not Badajoz. A Cáceres hotel fails when the gate is in the other province. Read the postcode twice before the plains heat up in the afternoon sun on the open road toward Madrid this afternoon.
