Castile and León: how this area actually works
Valladolid is the capital and a major court city. León, Burgos, Salamanca, Zamora, Palencia, Ávila, Segovia, and Soria are the other provincial capitals, spread across meseta that punishes a wrong day. SGIP centros serve these courts as state establishments. The Junta de Castilla y León does not run a separate prison police with a public roll. A person arrested in Salamanca may be placed far from the university squares. institucionpenitenciaria.es explains the official route and will not search a surname. Ask the lawyer which centre before you tell a family to meet at the cathedral. Nine provinces do not mean nine interchangeable gates.
Madrid sits on the southern edge of this map. Soto del Real and Valdemoro are in the Community of Madrid, not in Segovia or Ávila, even when the commute feels continuous. An arrest in Segovia is not a Madrid visit until the papers say so. The AVE stops at Valladolid, Palencia, and León make the capital feel near and the centros feel optional. They are not optional. Burgos and Soria add long interiors. Women and young people may be in a different centre from the men’s house in a local story. This community page is the scale on which those distinctions start. It is not a list of internos.
Comunicaciones need authorisation and identification. Winter fog and summer heat on the plateau both destroy tight connections. This guide copies no hours. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. A transfer into the Basque Country or Catalonia is a change of administration, not just a longer ticket. Confirm the letterhead. If the person is released to an address in a provincial capital, stop planning the centro. The Junta’s tourism pages will not know the gate. Use the postcode from the prison papers only. Soria is not Valladolid, and a cathedral is not the gate.
Finding someone held in Castile and León
Confirm the centro with SGIP or the lawyer. Castile and León is too large for a city guess. There is no public inmate search.
Separate Valladolid from the Community of Madrid centres, and separate each provincial capital from the others. Salamanca is not León.
Visits and family practicalities
Read institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Bring DNI or passport. This page does not print a timetable.
Permissions are per centre. A long drive from Soria to another province is normal and still has to be on time. If the person moves, rebook. Lawyers use a different channel.
Getting around Castile and León
Valladolid-Campo Grande is the rail hub, with AVE toward Madrid and north toward León. Burgos, Salamanca, and Palencia have strong links. Ávila and Segovia sit closer to Madrid. Soria and Zamora need more planning. The centro is rarely at the station square.
Valladolid airport is limited. Madrid is the usual international arrival, then the AVE. Drivers use the A-6, A-62, and A-1. Distances are the whole problem. A hotel in Segovia is the wrong base for a Burgos gate. Read the province, leave margin for empty roads that are still slow, and ignore vineyard routes unless the letter names them. Soria, Zamora, and Ávila are different days. A Segovia hotel fails when the centro is in León. Leave margin for empty roads. Zamora, Ávila, and Palencia are different days. A Segovia hotel fails when the centro is in León. Check the province twice before you leave Madrid, and do not follow a wine road or a cathedral tour.
