Aragon prisons: Zaragoza courts, SGIP centros, and family visits

Aragon sits between the Pyrenees and the Ebro, with Zaragoza as capital. Its prisons are SGIP centros penitenciarios. The community does not publish who is held in them.

Aragon: how this area actually works

Zaragoza holds the courts, the regional government, and most of the population. Huesca and Teruel are the other provincial capitals, far apart in a dry interior. SGIP runs the centros that serve these courts. A person arrested in the city is not guaranteed a cell inside the municipal boundary. Classification and space decide. The lawyer usually learns the centre before the family does. institucionpenitenciaria.es describes the visit process and will not look up a surname. The Gobierno de Aragón will not either. Prisons remain a state competence here, unlike the transferred systems in Catalonia and the Basque Country.

The Pyrenees border with France adds a second country to family travel. A French prison is a different administration. If the papers are Spanish and the centre is in Aragon, you follow SGIP. Zaragoza’s AVE station makes Madrid feel close, and Madrid’s Soto del Real and Valdemoro are still other communities. Do not ride south because a headline said “a Spanish prison.” Teruel’s hills and Huesca’s valleys make a wrong province expensive. The Expo site and the Basílica del Pilar are not gates. Ask which centro is current, then read only that page. Women and young people may be placed outside the community even when the court sat in Zaragoza.

Comunicaciones need prior authorisation and identification. This regional guide does not copy a timetable. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. A transfer to Catalonia would also be a change of administration, not just a change of train, because Brians and the other Catalan centres are under the Generalitat. Confirm the letterhead. If the person has been released to an address in Delicias or the Casco, stop planning a prison visit. Aragon on this page is geography and procedure. It is not a booking log and not a list of módulos.

Finding someone held in Aragon

Confirm the centro with SGIP or the lawyer. Aragon is the community. Zaragoza, Huesca, and Teruel are not one gate. There is no public name search.

Separate a state SGIP centre from a Catalan or Basque prison, and from a night in police custody. The Ebro city is the court capital, not a promise of the address.

Visits and family practicalities

Use institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Bring DNI or passport as instructed. This page lists no hours.

A permission for one centre dies at the next. Lawyers have their own access. If staffing changes the day, only the centro can rebook. Do not arrive on the strength of a group-chat screenshot.

Getting around Aragon

Zaragoza-Delicias is the AVE hub toward Madrid and Barcelona. Huesca and Teruel need extra time by regional train or road. The centro approach is the official one, often outside the old centre. Buses cover the last part.

Zaragoza airport is the local flight. Madrid and Barcelona airports are the alternatives, then the AVE. Drivers use the A-2, A-23, and A-68. Wind on the plateau and summer heat both punish a tight slot. A hotel by the Pilar is useful only when the postcode is in the city. Read it before you pay. Jaca and Alcañiz are not the capital. Calatayud and Tarazona are not Zaragoza. Leave time for the plateau wind. Monzón and Ejea are not Zaragoza, and a Pyrenees hotel is the wrong base when the centro is in the city. Read the province before you leave Delicias, and leave a spare hour on the A-23 today. Leave early.

Questions families actually ask

Does Aragon publish an inmate list?
No. SGIP does not offer a public name search for Zaragoza or for any other centro.
Are Aragonese prisons under the regional government?
No. They are state centros under SGIP. The Gobierno de Aragón does not book family comunicaciones.
Will a Zaragoza case stay in the city?
Not always. SGIP may use another centre. Follow the establishment named on the papers.
