Asturias prisons: Oviedo courts, SGIP centros, and family visits

Asturias is the single-province community on the Bay of Biscay, capital Oviedo, with Gijón as the port. Prisons are SGIP centros. Nobody publishes a list of names.

Asturias: how this area actually works

Oviedo is the capital and the seat of the courts. Gijón, Avilés, and Mieres are the other towns. SGIP runs the centros penitenciarios. The Principality’s own government does not. A person arrested in Gijón may be held in a local centre or moved elsewhere in the state estate after classification. Police cells are not the visit. The green hills and the mining valleys make distances longer than a coastal map suggests. institucionpenitenciaria.es is the official route for comunicaciones. It will not search a surname. Ask the lawyer which centro is current before you tell relatives to use Oviedo’s cathedral as a meeting point.

Asturias is not Galicia and not Cantabria. Each community has its own courts. The prison administration for all three is still SGIP, and the centre is still specific. A Madrid centro such as Soto del Real is a different community and a different AVE day. Basque prisons, once you cross into that community, are a different administration again. Do not follow a Bilbao rumour into a Basque gate with Asturian papers. Confirm the letterhead. Women and young people may be placed outside Asturias. This page will not pretend there is one jail for the whole coast.

Comunicaciones require authorisation and identification. Rain and mountain roads make lateness common, and the gate does not extend a slot because the AS-II was slow. This guide copies no timetable. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. If the person is released to an address in Cimadevilla or the Oviedo old town, confirm that before you keep the hotel. The community is a map for families who already know the centro. It is not a roster of módulos and not a substitute for the lawyer’s call. Avilés is not Oviedo either.

Finding someone held in Asturias

Ask SGIP or the lawyer. Asturias is the community of the court and not always the community of the cell. There is no public inmate search.

Oviedo and Gijón are different cities. A Basque or Galician prison is a different trip. Match the centro on the papers before you choose an airport.

Visits and family practicalities

Follow institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Bring the identification requested. This page does not print hours.

Permissions do not transfer if SGIP moves the person. Lawyers use a separate route. Children follow the centre’s current rule. A cancelled day is rebooked only by the centro.

Getting around Asturias

Oviedo and Gijón have rail links toward León and the plateau. Avilés is a short hop from the port. The centro’s last kilometre is in the official directions, not at the seafront. FEVE and Renfe both appear in local journeys. Check which one you actually need.

Asturias airport is at Santiago del Monte, between Avilés and Oviedo. Madrid is the usual long-haul connection, then a flight or the train north. Drivers use the A-66 and the coastal autovía. Fog on the passes is a reason to leave early. A hotel in Gijón is the wrong base for an Oviedo-area gate. Read the municipality. Covadonga’s lakes are not a landmark for a visit. Mieres and Langreo are mining towns, not a substitute for the centro named on the papers. Leave time for mountain fog. Langreo and Mieres are not the capital, so read the town before you leave the airport at Santiago del Monte. Cangas del Narcea is not Oviedo. Leave the morning free if the papers name an inland valley.

Questions families actually ask

Does Asturias have a public inmate list?
No. SGIP does not publish detainee names for Oviedo, Gijón, or any other centro.
Is the regional government the prison authority?
No. Centros in Asturias are state establishments under SGIP. The Principality does not book visitas.
Will a Gijón arrest stay in Gijón?
Not necessarily. SGIP assigns the centro. It may be elsewhere in the state estate. Follow the papers.
