Balearic Islands prisons: Palma, SGIP centros, and family visits

The Balearic Islands are their own autonomous community, capital Palma. Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera share a government and an SGIP prison reality. There is no public list of names.

Balearic Islands: how this area actually works

Palma is the capital. Ibiza, Mahón, and Ciutadella have their own rhythms, and Formentera is a further ferry. SGIP runs centros penitenciarios for the islands as part of the state system. A tourist arrest in Magaluf or Sant Antoni is not a resort booking. Police custody is brief. The centro, once assigned, may be on Mallorca even when the court paperwork started on another island. Ferries and flights then become part of the visit, not a holiday extra. institucionpenitenciaria.es explains comunicaciones and will not search a surname. The Govern de les Illes Balears does not keep a public roll either. Ask the lawyer which island.

Families flying in for a weekend often assume a same-day comunicación because Palma airport is busy. Authorisation does not work that way. Catalonia is the next coastline north and a different prison administration. A Brians visit is not an island visit. Madrid’s centros are another system of SGIP centres with different addresses. German, English, and Italian relatives are common here and still need Spanish visit rules once the person is in a Spanish centro. The language of the beach is not the language of the file. Women and young people may be placed off the island of arrest. This page will not invent a jail in every port.

Comunicaciones require identification and prior approval. This guide copies no hours. A missed ferry is not repaired at the gate. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. If the person has been released to an address in Palma or Ibiza town, confirm release before you keep a tourist apartment. The community is four inhabited islands and one administration. It is not a roster. Read the municipality on the letter, because a Menorca address and a Mallorca centro are a dawn start, not a walk. Ibiza town is not Palma, and a dawn ferry is not a slot.

Finding someone held in Balearic Islands

Confirm the centro and the island with SGIP or the lawyer. The Balearics are one community and several boat rides. There is no public inmate search.

Separate a Spanish SGIP centre from a Catalan prison and from a police cell in a resort town. The airport is not the establishment.

Visits and family practicalities

Use institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Bring passport or DNI as instructed. This page lists no timetable.

An approval for a Mallorca centre does not work on Ibiza. If the person moves to the mainland, start again. Lawyers have their own route. Book the ferry only after the slot exists.

Getting around Balearic Islands

Palma airport is the main arrival. Ibiza and Menorca have their own airports. Ferries link the islands and also Barcelona or Valencia, which matters if the centro is actually on the mainland. Palma’s city buses are not the centro map. Use official directions.

Drivers on Mallorca use the Ma-19 and the Via de Cintura, which jam in summer. A hotel in Magaluf or Sant Antoni is leisure geography. Stay where you can reach the gate, and leave a spare sailing if the visit is the next morning. Formentera is not a prison island you should assume. Read the papers twice. Mahón and Ciutadella are not Palma. A resort pin in Magaluf will not become the centro. Mahón is not Palma, and a package flight is not authorisation. Leave a spare sailing, and do not treat Magaluf as the gate if the papers say Palma.

Questions families actually ask

Is there a public list of Balearic inmates?
No. SGIP does not publish detainee names for Palma or for the other islands.
Does a case on Ibiza stay on Ibiza?
Not always. The centro may be on Mallorca or, after transfer, on the mainland. Follow the papers.
Are the islands under Catalonia’s prison service?
No. The Balearics use the state SGIP system. Catalan centres are under the Generalitat.
