Andalusia prisons: SGIP centros, Seville courts, and family visits

Andalusia is Spain’s largest autonomous community, capital Seville, from Huelva to Almería. Centros penitenciarios here sit under the state Secretaría General de Instituciones Penitenciarias, not under a Catalan or Basque service. There is no public name list.

Andalusia: how this area actually works

Seville is the capital and a major court city. Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, Cádiz, Jaén, Almería, and Huelva each have their own judicial life across a community that is bigger than many European countries. SGIP, inside the Interior Ministry, runs the centros penitenciarios for Andalusia. That is a different phone book from Catalonia’s Generalitat and from the Basque prison administration. Families who search “cárcel Sevilla” still have to learn which centre the paperwork names. A provincial court town is not automatically the gate. Police custody after an arrest in a neighbourhood comisaría is a short first stage. The centro is the visit you plan.

The AVE makes Seville, Málaga, and Córdoba feel close to Madrid, which tempts relatives to treat Soto del Real or Valdemoro as if they were local. Those are Community of Madrid centres. An Andalusian case usually stays in the SGIP estate that serves this community unless a transfer says otherwise. Costa del Sol addresses in Marbella or Torremolinos are not centros. Almería’s port and Huelva’s industrial edge add long road days from the capital. institucionpenitenciaria.es explains comunicaciones and will not search a surname. The Junta does not run an inmate index. Ask the lawyer which centre is current before anyone books a hotel by the Giralda or the Alhambra.

Comunicaciones require identification, often a DNI or passport, and the centre’s own rules on who may enter. This page does not copy session grids, because they change. Women, young people, and closed regimes can be in different centres from the one named in a headline. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules, not a lobby shop you invent from another country. A Catalan centre such as Brians is a different administration. If the person has been released to an address in Triana or the Albaicín, confirm release before you keep the train. Andalusia on this page is the community. It is not a roll of who is inside any módulo.

Finding someone held in Andalusia

Spain publishes no detainee index. Ask the centro, SGIP, or the lawyer, and quote the centre name already on the papers. Seville, Málaga, and Granada are not interchangeable gates.

Separate SGIP Andalusia from the Community of Madrid centres and from Catalonia’s own prisons. The autonomous community explains the map. It does not list occupants.

Visits and family practicalities

Read institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Authorisation is specific to that house. This guide does not reprint hours or a switchboard.

Bring the identification the centre requests. A family comunicación and a lawyer visit are different. If the person transfers, the permission does not follow. Children follow the current visitor rule, which you read officially.

Getting around Andalusia

Seville Santa Justa, Málaga María Zambrano, and Granada station are the AVE anchors. Cádiz, Córdoba, and Almería have their own rail. Local buses do the last kilometres to a centro, which is often outside the historic centre. Use the official approach, not a cathedral pin.

Málaga and Seville airports take most flights. Drivers use the A-92 and the A-4. Summer heat and August traffic on the coast wipe out tight slots. A hotel in the old city is the wrong base when the gate is in another province of Andalusia. Read the municipality, and leave a margin for the last taxi. Jerez, Jaén, and Huelva are different nights. Úbeda, Ronda, and the Alpujarra are not centros. Read the province twice before you pay, and leave a spare hour for the last taxi in summer heat.

Questions families actually ask

Does Andalusia run its own prison service like Catalonia?
No. Andalusian centros are under SGIP, the state prison administration. Catalonia and the Basque Country are the administrations that sit apart from that system.
Can I search Andalusian inmates by name?
No. Spain does not publish a public roster. The centro or the lawyer confirms placement.
Is a Málaga arrest held in Seville?
Not necessarily. SGIP assigns the centro. Follow the name on official papers rather than the city of arrest.
