Galicia prisons: Santiago courts, SGIP centros, and family visits

Galicia is the northwest community, capital Santiago de Compostela, with A Coruña, Vigo, Lugo, and Ourense as the other poles. SGIP runs the centros. There is no public name list.

Galicia: how this area actually works

Santiago is the capital and a court city, not only a pilgrimage destination. A Coruña and Vigo are the large coastal cities. Lugo and Ourense complete the four provinces. SGIP centros serve this community as state establishments. The Xunta does not publish internos. A person arrested in Vigo may be placed in a Galician centre or moved elsewhere after classification. The Camino’s yellow arrows are not directions to a gate. institucionpenitenciaria.es will not search a surname. Ask the lawyer which centre before relatives book a hostel on the Obradoiro. Rain and rías make the coast feel like several countries. It is one prison administration and several long local trips.

Portugal’s border at Tui and Verín creates the same mistake as Badajoz: a neighbouring country with its own prisons. A Portuguese establishment is DGRSP. A Galician centro is SGIP. Asturias, to the east, is another community inside the same state system and still not this gate. Women and young people may be held outside the province of arrest. This page is not a roster. It is the reason a family in Madrid should not assume the person is in Soto del Real simply because the news said Spain. Read the community and the centre. The lawyer in Vigo or Santiago will be more specific than a search box.

Comunicaciones require authorisation and identification. This guide copies no hours. Atlantic weather delays buses and regional trains. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. If the person is released to an address in Pontevedra or Ferrol, confirm release. Four provinces do not share a visiting room. The cathedral queue is not the centro queue. Use the postcode, and treat a pilgrimage timetable as irrelevant unless the papers name Santiago as the town of the gate. Ferrol and Pontevedra are not Santiago. Ask the lawyer first before you book any travel at all.

Finding someone held in Galicia

Confirm the centro with SGIP or the lawyer. Galicia’s four provinces are not one address. There is no public inmate search.

Separate a Spanish centro from a Portuguese prison across the Minho, and from a Madrid centro. The Camino does not decide placement.

Visits and family practicalities

Follow institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Bring DNI or passport. This page lists no timetable.

A Vigo permission does not open a centre in A Coruña. If SGIP moves the person, rebook. Lawyers use their own route. Children follow the official visitor rule.

Getting around Galicia

Santiago, A Coruña, Vigo, and Ourense are the rail towns. Vigo and A Coruña have the main airports. Lugo and the interior need more time. The centro is not the Obradoiro and not the port terminal. Use official directions for the last kilometres.

Drivers use the AP-9 and the A-6. Portuguese relatives cross at Tui. A hotel in Porto is another country. A hotel in Santiago is wrong for a Vigo gate. Rain is the default. Leave margin, and do not follow scallop-shell signs. Ferrol and Pontevedra are not the capital. Lugo and Ourense are inland days. A Porto hotel is in Portugal. Read the province before you follow any scallop shell. Ourense and Lugo are inland days. A Porto hotel is in Portugal. Leave margin for rain on the rías. Vigo and A Coruña are different days. A hostel on the Obradoiro is useless when the centro is on the coast. Check the province before you follow a scallop shell any farther inland today.
