Canary Islands prisons: SGIP centros and family comunicaciones

The Canary Islands are an autonomous community off Africa, with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife sharing capital functions. Prisons are SGIP centros. There is no public name list.

Canary Islands: how this area actually works

Two provinces structure the community: Las Palmas, covering Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, covering Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Courts sit in the two capitals. SGIP runs the centros penitenciarios as state establishments, thousands of kilometres from Madrid’s Soto del Real and Valdemoro. A family that books a mainland centro for a Canarian case will miss the visit by an ocean. Police custody on a resort strip in Adeje or Maspalomas is not the prison. The lawyer confirms the island and the centro. institucionpenitenciaria.es explains comunicaciones and will not search a surname. The Gobierno de Canarias does not publish occupants either.

Inter-island flights are part of ordinary justice here. A person arrested on Lanzarote or La Palma may be placed on Gran Canaria or Tenerife. That hop has to be planned after the slot exists, not before. Tourist relatives from northern Europe often arrive with a package-holiday timetable. Authorisation will not bend to a return flight the same afternoon. Women and young people may be in a different centre from the men’s house named in a news story. This is not the Balearics and not Andalusia, even though all three receive the same kind of visitor. The administration is SGIP. The address is the one on the letter.

Comunicaciones need identification and prior approval. This page copies no hours. Atlantic weather delays small planes, so leave a spare day when the visit is on a minor island connection. Money and parcels follow SGIP rules. If the person is moved to the peninsula, you have a new administration address and a long flight. Confirm that before you pay for a week in Puerto de la Cruz. A release to a local address ends the prison plan. The community page is here so families stop treating the Canaries as a suburb of Madrid.

Finding someone held in Canary Islands

Confirm the island and the centro with SGIP or the lawyer. The Canaries are one community and two provinces. There is no public inmate index.

Separate these centros from Madrid SGIP centres and from any Catalan prison. A resort police cell is not the comunicación.

Visits and family practicalities

Read institucionpenitenciaria.es for the named centro. Bring passport or DNI. This guide has no timetable to memorize.

An approval on Tenerife does not work on Gran Canaria. If the person moves, rebook. Lawyers use their own route. Do not schedule the visit against a same-day international departure.

Getting around Canary Islands

Gran Canaria and Tenerife South and North airports take the long-haul flights. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Palma have their own. Inter-island hops are short and still missable. The centro is not at the terminal. Use official directions for the last kilometres.

Drivers on each island face holiday traffic in winter as well as summer. A hotel in a resort is the wrong base unless the postcode matches. Santa Cruz and Las Palmas are the two capitals. Read which one the papers mean. El Hierro and La Gomera are ferries or small planes, not assumptions. La Palma and Fuerteventura do not share a centro. Read the island on the letter before you pay for a week. Adeje and Maspalomas are resorts, not centros. La Gomera is not Tenerife. Leave a spare hop between the islands, and do not assume Adeje is the gate or that both capitals share one campus.

Questions families actually ask

Does the Canary Islands government run the prisons?
No. Centros are under SGIP, the state administration. The regional government does not publish a detainee list.
Can I search Canarian inmates online?
No. There is no public roster. The centro or the lawyer confirms placement.
Will a Lanzarote case stay on Lanzarote?
Often the centro is on a larger island. SGIP assigns it. Follow the papers before you book the hop.
