Nederland prison guides

Dutch prisons: DJI guides, PI locations, and family visits

Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen runs the Dutch estate. Placement moves between PIs more than families expect, and there is no open name index. You work through DJI and the inrichting on the letterhead. The twelve provinces — from Groningen and Friesland to Limburg and Zeeland — are the map.

PIs are not town jails

A Penitentiaire Inrichting can hold remand and sentenced people under one directorate. Extra beveiligde inrichting (EBI) capacity is tiny and not a walk-in. Rotterdam, Vught, Zwolle and Almere each have their own visit logistics and public-transport last mile.

Families usually need the prisoner number or a recent transfer letter. DJI’s public site explains bezoek in Dutch; we translate the practical bits on each PI page without turning it into a fake roster.

How Netherlands is carved up on this site

Netherlands (Nederland) is a separate country folder — not a tab on a mixed European roster, and not a US state code. The analogue of a US state here is the first-level unit: Provinces. The twelve provinces — from Groningen and Friesland to Limburg and Zeeland — are the map. Amsterdam is in North Holland, not a national jail. Rotterdam is South Holland. Utrecht is its own province. We do not mix Belgian provinces into this hub. Open a province page when you already know the slice of Netherlands; stay on this hub when you need the national rules, the official locator, and the list of those units.

DJI runs Penitentiaire Inrichtingen. Remand and sentenced people can share a PI. Extra beveiligde inrichting capacity is tiny. Rotterdam, Vught, Zwolle, Almere and Ter Apel (different regime conversations) are not one bezoek queue. Facility articles under /netherlands/ are building guides (address, operator, how a visit is booked). They are not who-is-inside tables. If a province has few prison guides, that is coverage on this site, not an empty prison system. Booking PI Amsterdam because Schiphol is ‘Amsterdam’, or treating a German JVA in Kleve as a Dutch PI. Open the province page, then the PI guide.

Finding someone held in Netherlands

Netherlands does not publish a Google-style inmate spreadsheet. Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen (DJI) is the named official route (www.dji.nl/). DJI and the PI on the letterhead. Families usually need a prisoner number or a recent transfer note. There is no open name index. The Netherlands does not publish detainee lists. Visit rights and PIQ/bezoek rules come from DJI and the specific PI.

A US reader used to sheriff websites will type “Netherlands inmate search” and find nothing of the kind. That is the law. Court lists, Facebook groups and paid “worldwide jail” products are not Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen (DJI). If the person was remanded overnight, reception can lag; if they were transferred out of the province you had in mind, the old desk is the wrong door. Use the province pages below to stop treating Amsterdam as a synonym for the whole country.

Visits, money and staying in touch

Visiting in Netherlands is not a US-style walk-up. Bezoek is booked with that PI. PIQ and ID rules come from DJI. Extra-secure regimes have tighter lists. Do not bring a Belgian or German visiting paper and expect it to work. Where a facility guide on this site quotes hours, they were taken from that establishment’s official page — re-check the day before you travel. This country hub will not invent a national timetable.

Dress codes, dog searches and what you may carry are house rules. Money and remote contact, where they exist, go through the official national channel — not a personal transfer to a cellmate. Schiphol is North Holland geography; Rotterdam The Hague Airport is not Vught. NS last miles matter. The Belgian border at Maastricht is still a country change for custody.

Travel, borders and the wrong-gate problem

Schiphol is North Holland geography; Rotterdam The Hague Airport is not Vught. NS last miles matter. The Belgian border at Maastricht is still a country change for custody. Print the gate address from the official prison page, not from a maps pin that only names Amsterdam or “Dutch prison”. Neighbouring countries on this site have their own URLs; a cheaper flight into the next capital is not a visiting permit.

Booking PI Amsterdam because Schiphol is ‘Amsterdam’, or treating a German JVA in Kleve as a Dutch PI. Open the province page, then the PI guide. If you only know a town name, match it to a province first, then to a facility guide. Confusing one province of Netherlands with another is the most common way to book the wrong visit.

Provinces of Netherlands — each on its own URL

Netherlands is not mixed with the United States or with other European countries. Below is this country’s own first-level map (Provinces). Open a unit for a longer article on how custody, visits and travel actually work there. US readers looking for a county inmate spreadsheet will not find one: Netherlands does not publish that, and neither do we.

Provinces

12 pages, written so Netherlands does not collapse into a single mixed list. This is the analogue of opening a US state after you choose the United States.

Prison guides in Netherlands

Each page is written for that establishment — address, how families actually locate someone, and how visits work — not a copied country intro.

Questions families actually ask

Can I look up who is in PI Rotterdam?
No. Ask DJI or the PI, or go through the lawyer. This site lists the institution, not the people inside it.
Does CurrentPrisonList list who is in jail in Netherlands today?
No. Netherlands pages are geographic and procedural guides. The Netherlands does not publish detainee lists. Visit rights and PIQ/bezoek rules come from DJI and the specific PI.
Why does Netherlands have Provinces instead of one mixed list?
The twelve provinces — from Groningen and Friesland to Limburg and Zeeland — are the map. Amsterdam is in North Holland, not a national jail. Rotterdam is South Holland. Utrecht is its own province. We do not mix Belgian provinces into this hub. Mixing those units would be the same mistake as putting Ohio inmates under California.
How do I visit a prison in Netherlands?
Identify the establishment through Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen (DJI) or the lawyer, get on the visitor list, and book that house. Bezoek is booked with that PI. PIQ and ID rules come from DJI. Extra-secure regimes have tighter lists. Do not bring a Belgian or German visiting paper and expect it to work. Plan travel via Amsterdam only if the letter actually names a house there — the province pages exist because it often does not.

Other countries

Each country is a separate area of the site so US county rosters, UK prisons and European JVA / maison d’arrêt guides never share a URL.
