North Holland: how this area actually works
Amsterdam’s courts generate the cases families mean by “a Holland prison,” yet the province runs north through Zaandam, Haarlem, Beverwijk, Alkmaar, Hoorn, and Den Helder, plus Texel. Haarlem, not Amsterdam, is the provincial seat. That split already causes wrong buildings. The old Bijlmer prison is closed. Current DJI capacity for Amsterdam-area cases includes institutions such as the PI in Zaanstad and, very often, PI Almere across the border in Flevoland. PI Rotterdam is another Randstad house in South Holland. None of these is a police station on the Leidseplein. The letter names the gate.
Schiphol adds a special confusion. Airport detention and a criminal PI are different legal settings. A relative who landed and was held is not automatically in the same institution as someone sentenced by the Amsterdam court. Ask which authority is responsible. Texel and Den Helder make the north of the province a ferry and navy town, far from a city PI in travelling time. Police cells in Alkmaar or Hoorn are overnight facts. The penitentiary placement may be south of the North Sea Canal. dji.nl has no surname search to settle the argument in a group chat.
Bezoek at a Zaanstad or Almere institution is a suburban or polder trip, not a canal walk. Identification and prior approval apply. Haarlem’s provincial offices will not add your name to a list. Women and young people often go to different houses from the men’s PI in the news. If the paperwork says PI Vught, you are going to North Brabant regardless of an Amsterdam postcode on the charge sheet. Confirm the week of the visit, because Randstad transfers are common while cases are still moving. Haarlem’s provincial offices and Alkmaar’s cheese market are not gates. Den Helder is a long train if the PI is actually there.
Finding someone held in North Holland
Use DJI or the lawyer. North Holland is the province of the court, not always the province of the cell. Quote the PI if you have it.
Separate Schiphol holding, city police custody, and a penitentiary institution. Only the last is the bezoek most families are trying to book. Hilversum, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen are in the province and still not a reason to skip the establishment name. Purmerend’s buses serve commuters, not a roster. Read the postcode twice today.
Visits and family practicalities
Read dji.nl for the named house. Amsterdam street directions are useless until that house is in Amsterdam. This guide does not copy a visiting grid.
Approvals do not transfer when DJI moves someone from Zaanstad to Almere or Rotterdam. Start again with the new PI. Bring the identification the institution specifies.
Getting around North Holland
Amsterdam Centraal, Sloterdijk, and Zuid cover different corners of the city. Haarlem is a short train west. Zaandam is north of the IJ. Alkmaar and Den Helder continue on that line. Texel is a ferry from Den Helder.
Schiphol is inside the province, which helps arrivals and still leaves a train to the PI. Drivers face the A10 ring and the Coentunnel. Use DJI’s entrance notes. A hotel in the canal belt is convenient only when the confirmed gate is in the city. Texel’s ferry will not wait for a missed bezoek on the mainland. If the letter says Almere or Rotterdam, leave Amsterdam the same morning with time to spare.
