Groningen province prisons: DJI placement and family bezoek

Groningen is both a city and a province in the far northeast, between the Wadden coast and Drenthe. Courts sit in the city. Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen decides the prison, and dji.nl does not list names.

Groningen: how this area actually works

The province takes in the city of Groningen, the hogeland toward Eemshaven, and the eastern peat towns. Students, the university hospital, and the port dominate the local news, which makes a custody case feel as if it should stay inside the ring road. Dutch penitentiary institutions do not work like municipal jails with a public booking log. Police cells are a short first stop. A Penitentiaire Inrichting is a DJI establishment, and the directorate moves people when classification, regime, or space requires it. A hearing in Groningen can be followed by a placement in Drenthe, Overijssel, or further into the Randstad.

Families searching “Groningen gevangenis” often land on historic photographs rather than today’s gate. The working address is the one DJI prints. Veenhuizen’s prison village is next door in Drenthe, and it is a different visit from a Groningen police station. Eemshaven’s industry and the Wadden ferries pull relatives in from Germany and the islands. None of those arrival points is a visiting room. Ask the lawyer which inrichting holds the person this week before anyone books a hotel on the Grote Markt. The Martinitoren is only a meeting point beside the square.

Bezoek, the Dutch prison visit, is arranged with the detainee’s cooperation and the institution’s rules. Groningen’s provincial website will not book it. Nor will a copied American inmate search. Women, young people, and immigration detention sit on different legal tracks from an ordinary PI sentence. If the paperwork names PI Rotterdam, PI Vught, or PI Almere, use that province’s guide and that gate. Staying in the city because the arrest happened here only helps when the letter agrees. Eemshaven’s terminals are a long local ride from any confirmed gate in the city.

Finding someone held in Groningen

The Netherlands has no public detainee index. Contact DJI or the lawyer, and quote any PI name already on a letter. A night in police custody in the city is not proof the person is still in the province.

Match the Dutch institution name. Groningen as a province explains the map. It does not certify that every local case remains north of Assen after the first hearing. Winschoten and Delfzijl have their own police desks and no public list of who left them.

Visits and family practicalities

Read the live bezoek instructions on dji.nl for the PI that actually holds the person. Approval, identification, and punctuality are enforced. This guide does not copy session grids.

Remand and sentenced regimes differ. A visit cleared for one house cannot be used at another. If a slot is withdrawn, only the institution can replace it. Lawyers have a separate route from family visitors. Keep the approval where gate staff can read it.

Getting around Groningen

Groningen station is the rail head, with trains south toward Assen and Zwolle. Groningen Airport Eelde sits on the Drenthe border. Local buses cover the hogeland and the eastern towns. Wadden ferries add a tide to the day.

German relatives crossing from Leer or Nieuweschans still need a Dutch establishment address. The provincial capital and the prison gate are the same city only when DJI says so. Leave slack for a transfer onward to another province. A night on the Grote Markt helps only when the PI postcode is in the city, so read that postcode before you pay. Hogeland buses do not pass a prison gate unless the letter says they should.

Questions families actually ask

Can I search Groningen detainees by name?
No. DJI does not publish a roster. The lawyer or the named PI confirms where someone is held.
Does a Groningen arrest stay in the city?
Not always. After police custody, DJI can place someone in another province. Follow the establishment on official papers.
Where are bezoek times listed?
On the page for that PI at dji.nl. They change, and this provincial guide does not reprint them.
