Friesland prisons: Leeuwarden courts, DJI, and family bezoek

Friesland, locally Fryslân, keeps its own language and a court town in Leeuwarden. The Wadden islands and the Afsluitdijk define the map. Prison placement is still a DJI decision, with no public name search.

Friesland: how this area actually works

Leeuwarden is the provincial capital and the main court centre. Sneek, Drachten, Heerenveen, and Harlingen are the other towns families actually drive between. Frisian is an official language here, and some relatives will receive Dutch paperwork that does not match the place-name they use at home. That language gap does not create a separate prison system. Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen runs penitentiary institutions for the country. A person remanded from Leeuwarden may be held in the north or moved toward Zwolle, Vught, or the Randstad when the regime requires it. Ask counsel which house.

The islands — Terschelling, Ameland, Vlieland, Schiermonnikoog — make visit planning a ferry problem on top of a prison problem. A morning boat can miss an afternoon bezoek even when the PI is on the mainland. Harlingen is the usual port, not a visiting room. Heerenveen’s station is a rail junction, not a prison. Police cells in a small town are not the sentenced institution. Ask which authority holds the person before you tell an island household to travel. The Elfstedentocht towns are a sporting map, useless as a directory of gates. Sneek’s water gates are for yachts, not for bezoek.

DJI’s public site explains bezoek in Dutch. It does not list occupants. There is no provincial roster sitting behind the Frisian flag. If correspondence names a PI outside Friesland, the visit is outside Friesland. Community sanctions and probation are a different appointment from a closed bezoek. Confirm status, then read only that institution’s visitor page. A hotel on the Leeuwarden canals is worthwhile when the gate is in the city and a wasted night when the letter says otherwise. Drachten and Sneek add their own local buses if the address is there.

Finding someone held in Friesland

Use DJI or the defence lawyer. Quote the PI if you have one. Friesland on this page is the province. It is not a claim that every Frisian case is inside the province tonight.

Police custody, remand, and a later transfer are different days. Island families should wait for the establishment name before they lock in a ferry that cannot be changed. A Dokkum or Franeker address on the file is a court fact, not a gate.

Visits and family practicalities

Bezoek requires the detainee to be registered at that PI and the visitor to be approved. Read dji.nl for the house named on the letter. Do not reuse another province’s screenshot.

Identification is checked at the gate. Children as visitors follow the institution’s current rule. Money and telephone access are DJI procedures, not something arranged at Leeuwarden station.

Getting around Friesland

Leeuwarden station connects toward Meppel and Zwolle, and toward Groningen. Heerenveen sits on the main line south, which matters if the confirmed PI is in Overijssel or beyond. Buses cover Sneek and Drachten.

Island crossings from Harlingen or Holwerd need their own timetable on top of the visit. The Afsluitdijk is the road link toward North Holland if a later transfer sends you west. Weather on the Wadden can cancel a boat. Leave a spare day when the visit is tight. If the confirmed PI is in Zwolle or further south, build the ferry and the train as one plan, not two hopeful halves. A Frisian place-name on the charge sheet does not move the gate.

Questions families actually ask

Is there a Frisian inmate search?
No. The Netherlands does not publish detainee names, in Dutch or in Frisian. Confirm placement through DJI or the lawyer.
Are the Wadden islands part of this guide?
Yes. The islands are in Friesland, but a prison visit is almost always on the mainland at whatever PI DJI names.
Does Leeuwarden automatically hold every local case?
No. DJI assigns the institution. The provincial capital is the court town, not a guarantee of the gate.
