North Brabant prisons: PI Vught, DJI, and family bezoek

North Brabant runs from Bergen op Zoom to Eindhoven and Venlo’s doorstep, with the capital in ’s-Hertogenbosch. PI Vught is the province’s best-known DJI institution, including extra-secure capacity. Names are not published.

North Brabant: how this area actually works

’s-Hertogenbosch, called Den Bosch in everyday speech, is the provincial capital and a court city. Eindhoven, Tilburg, Breda, Helmond, Oss, and Roosendaal are the other centres. PI Vught sits just south of Den Bosch. It combines ordinary penitentiary functions with the small extra beveiligde inrichting, the EBI, used for a handful of the highest-security detainees in the country. Most people at the PI are not in the EBI. Families must read DJI’s distinction before they prepare documents. A standard bezoek and an EBI visit are different procedures. Neither is a public list of names.

Brabant’s electronics industry and carnival cities create their own headlines, and “a Brabant prison” in a news story is not specific enough. Vught is the institution in our guides for this province. Other DJI sites and transfers back to PI Rotterdam or PI Almere still happen. A person arrested in Eindhoven may be in police custody overnight and in Vught, Rotterdam, or elsewhere afterward. Belgian relatives crossing at Chaam or from Antwerp are in a Dutch process once the PI is Dutch. dji.nl will not confirm a surname online. The lawyer in Den Bosch or Eindhoven usually can.

EBI visits involve extra approval and more time. Start that paperwork early and only if official guidance says the person is in that regime. Ordinary PI visits still need identification and a booked slot. The wooded edge of Vught is close to the station and easy to miss if you follow a generic pin. Women and young people are often in other institutions. If the letter names a different PI, leave Brabant. The provincial house in Den Bosch does not hold detainees and cannot add a visitor. Tilburg, Breda, and Oss keep their own court diaries and their own local buses.

Finding someone held in North Brabant

Confirm with DJI or the lawyer whether the placement is PI Vught, and whether it is the regular PI or the EBI. North Brabant matches prisons recorded in this province. It lists no detainees.

Eindhoven, Tilburg, and Breda arrests do not each have a public local jail roster. Police custody and the later PI are different buildings. Waalwijk, Uden, and Bergen op Zoom are easy to confuse with a gate when the only fact you have is the province.

Visits and family practicalities

Read dji.nl for PI Vught and follow the EBI instructions only when they apply. This page does not copy session times or claim a phone number.

An approval for the regular PI is not an EBI approval. If the person is moved to Rotterdam or Almere, that city’s rules replace Vught’s. Bring the identification specified for the regime you are actually entering.

Getting around North Brabant

’s-Hertogenbosch station is the rail point for Vught, with a bus or taxi south into the town. Eindhoven Airport is the regional flight alternative to Schiphol. Tilburg, Breda, and Eindhoven Centraal cover the rest of the province by train.

Drivers use the A2 and A59 toward Vught. Belgian families often come via the A16 or A67. The last kilometre depends on DJI’s map, not on the fortifications tourists visit in the old town. Arrive early enough that a missed bus does not cost the slot. A carnival weekend in Den Bosch fills hotels and slows the last taxi. If the letter names Rotterdam or Almere, leave Brabant and follow that province’s station instead.
