Limburg prisons: Maastricht courts, DJI placement, and bezoek

Dutch Limburg is the southern strip between Belgium and Germany, with Maastricht as capital. It is not Belgian Limburg. DJI runs any Dutch prison placement, and it does not publish names.

Limburg: how this area actually works

Maastricht holds the courts, the university, and the provincial government. Heerlen and Sittard-Geleen fill the former mining east. Venlo and Roermond line the Meuse toward the north. Three countries meet in daily commuting, which is exactly why families call the wrong prison service. A Dutch PI follows Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen and dji.nl. A Belgian prison in Belgian Limburg follows SPF Justice. A German Justizvollzugsanstalt follows the relevant German state. The letterhead tells you which of the three you are dealing with. Accent and the word Limburg do not. Heerlen’s mining terrils are landmarks, not visiting instructions.

People remanded in Maastricht can be placed in a local DJI institution or moved to PI Vught in North Brabant, which is the neighbouring province and a common national destination. Police cells in Venlo or Heerlen are not that PI. There is no public booking photograph site for the province. Cross-border workers who live in Aachen or Liège and are held in the Netherlands still need Dutch visit approval. The reverse is also true. Ask the lawyer for the country and the establishment before you buy a train ticket to the wrong Maastricht — there is a Belgian town life next door, but the Dutch provincial capital is this one.

Bezoek, once the PI is confirmed, follows that house’s rules. Maastricht’s station is international, with trains to Liège and toward Eindhoven, which helps and also multiplies wrong platforms. Identification from another EU country is often accepted when the institution says so, and refused when the document does not match the rule. Read the current page. Do not rely on a forum post. If the person is in Vught, use the North Brabant guide. If the person is in Hasselt or another Belgian house, stop using DJI instructions entirely. Venlo and Roermond line the Meuse and still do not share one gate. Sittard’s station serves commuters toward Germany.

Finding someone held in Limburg

Confirm the country first, then the institution. Dutch Limburg is this province. Belgian Limburg is a different page. Neither publishes a detainee roster.

A Maastricht arrest can end in a local PI, in Vught, or, in some cross-border situations, outside the Netherlands. The lawyer’s confirmation beats a guess from the border on the map. Weert, Echt, and Valkenburg are towns in this province, not a substitute for the postcode on the letter.

Visits and family practicalities

For a Dutch PI, use dji.nl and the named establishment. Bring the identification that house requests. This guide does not print hours.

Belgian and German visits use their own forms. A DJI approval will not open a Belgian gate. If the person transfers across a border, start the paperwork again in the new system.

Getting around Limburg

Maastricht station links to Eindhoven and to Liège. Heerlen connects toward Aachen and Sittard. Venlo and Roermond sit on the line north toward Nijmegen and south toward Roermond’s Meuse corridor. Buses cover the smaller towns.

Eindhoven Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport, and Brussels or Düsseldorf are all used. Drivers cross on the A2 and A76. Border queues are unpredictable. Build time, and carry the establishment postcode rather than a city name that exists in two countries. A hotel in Liège or Aachen is the wrong base for a Dutch PI, and a Maastricht hotel is wrong for a Belgian one. Read the country on the letterhead before you pay.

Questions families actually ask

Is this the same Limburg as in Belgium?
No. This is the Dutch province, capital Maastricht. Belgian Limburg, capital Hasselt, is a different administration and a different prison service.
Can I search Maastricht detainees online?
No. DJI does not publish a name list. Confirm placement officially or through the lawyer.
Does a Dutch Limburg case go to PI Vught?
Sometimes. Vught, in North Brabant, is a national DJI institution. It is one possible placement, not a rule you should assume.
