Gelderland prisons: Arnhem, Nijmegen, and DJI family bezoek

Gelderland is the large eastern province of rivers and the Veluwe, with Arnhem as capital and Nijmegen as the other court city. DJI places people in its own institutions. It does not publish names.

Gelderland: how this area actually works

Arnhem sits where the Rhine splits toward the IJssel and the Lower Rhine. Nijmegen faces Nijmegen’s river bridges and a large university population. Apeldoorn, Ede, Zutphen, Doetinchem, Tiel, and Nijkerk fill a province that touches five others. The historic Koepel in Arnhem, the domed prison, is no longer the working gate families should trust from an old photograph. DJI correspondence names the current institution. A tourist redevelopment of a closed jail is not a bezoek. If you are holding a letter, follow that address and ignore the dome. Ede and Apeldoorn sit on the same rail line and still host different errands.

Gelderland cases move. A remand from Arnhem or Nijmegen can be placed locally in whatever PI the directorate assigns, or sent toward PI Vught in North Brabant, Zwolle in Overijssel, or a Randstad house. The Veluwe national park is between several of these towns and is a terrible short cut when you are late. Police custody in Tiel or Doetinchem ends when the penitentiary placement begins. There is no provincial inmate board at the Huis der Provincie. German relatives crossing at Bergh or Babberich are still inside a Dutch legal process once the person is in a PI.

Bezoek rules live on dji.nl for the named house. Gelderland’s size means a wrong city costs the slot. Women, young people, and forensic psychiatric clinics are different campuses from a men’s PI, sometimes in this province and sometimes not. Ask before you assume “Gelderland” is specific enough. Community service and electronic monitoring, where ordered, do not use the prison visiting room. Confirm that the person is actually in custody this week. Apeldoorn’s palace gardens and the Hoge Veluwe are not on the route unless the letter names those towns. Zutphen and Doetinchem keep their own court days.

Finding someone held in Gelderland

Use DJI or the lawyer. Quote the institution. Gelderland explains the region. It is not a roster of Arnhem or Nijmegen detainees.

The closed Koepel is a landmark, not a current default address. If papers name Vught, Rotterdam, or Almere, those visits are outside this province. Harderwijk sits on the Veluwe edge and is a commuter town, not a default institution for Arnhem or Nijmegen cases. Wageningen and Tiel keep campus and river traffic that has nothing to do with a visiting slot at all this week.

Visits and family practicalities

Read the current bezoek page for the PI on the letter. Identification and approval are required. This guide does not publish a timetable.

River-city traffic in Arnhem and Nijmegen makes lateness common. The gate will not extend a slot because the bridge was open. Rebook only through the institution.

Getting around Gelderland

Arnhem Centraal and Nijmegen are the rail hubs, with lines toward Utrecht, Zwolle, and Germany via Emmerich. Apeldoorn and Ede-Wageningen sit on the main east-west route. Zutphen connects smaller towns.

Schiphol and Düsseldorf are the airports families actually use. The A12 and A50 cross the province. Veluwe roads look empty at noon and slow behind tourist traffic on sunny weekends. Match the DJI map for the last kilometre. A hotel in Nijmegen is the wrong base when the institution is in Arnhem or outside the province, so read the postcode first. River bridges open for shipping and wipe out a tight arrival. Allow that delay before you leave the station.

Questions families actually ask

Is the Arnhem Koepel still the visit address?
Do not use the historic dome as your destination. Follow the current institution named by DJI on official correspondence.
Can I search Gelderland prisoners by name?
No. There is no public Dutch detainee list. DJI or the lawyer confirms placement.
Does Nijmegen have a separate prison service?
No. Penitentiary institutions are national, under DJI. The court is local. The gate is whichever PI is assigned.
