South Holland prisons: PI Rotterdam, The Hague, and DJI bezoek

South Holland holds The Hague, Rotterdam, Leiden, and Dordrecht. PI Rotterdam in Hoogvliet is the penitentiary institution port-city families ask for first. DJI does not publish a list of names.

South Holland: how this area actually works

The provincial capital is The Hague, where national government and major courts sit. Rotterdam is the larger city and the port. Leiden, Delft, Gouda, Dordrecht, and Zoetermeer fill the gaps, and the whole province is one built-up band. PI Rotterdam, in Hoogvliet, is a DJI penitentiary institution for remand and sentenced adults. It is not a police cell and not the port authority. PI Haaglanden, associated with the Scheveningen side of The Hague, is a different institution again. Krimpen aan den IJssel and other local names appear in DJI’s estate. Only the name on the letter is the visit. Guessing from the port is how families reach the wrong desk.

South Holland on this page matches prisons recorded in that region, including PI Rotterdam. People are still transferred to PI Vught in North Brabant or to PI Almere in Flevoland when classification or the extra-secure estate requires it. The Hague’s international courts add a further mix of residents who do not know the Dutch bezoek system. Explain that visits are requested and approved. They are not a public gallery. dji.nl describes the process in Dutch and does not offer a name search. A ministerial building in The Hague is not the prison gate.

Bezoek at Hoogvliet is a metro-and-bus or a car trip south of the river, with its own entrance map. Scheveningen’s seafront is a different compass point if the institution is there. Identification, metal controls, and punctuality are standard. Overcrowded visiting calendars fill up. Book only through the official route for that PI. Women and young people may be held elsewhere in the province or outside it. If the person has moved, your Rotterdam approval does not follow them automatically. Leiden, Delft, and Gouda are court and rail towns, not substitute visiting rooms. Dordrecht’s bridges add delay when the address is south of Rotterdam.

Finding someone held in South Holland

Ask DJI or the lawyer, and keep the PI name. South Holland matches our recorded region for PI Rotterdam. It is not a roster of detainees in Rotterdam or The Hague.

Police custody, a PI, and a transfer to Vught are three different addresses. The port, the beach, and the Binnenhof are not shortcuts to any of them.

Visits and family practicalities

Use dji.nl for PI Rotterdam or for the other institution named in the papers. This guide does not copy bezoek hours. Bring the identification you were told to bring.

A Hoogvliet slot is not a Scheveningen slot. If DJI moves the person, rebook. Lawyers do not share the family visiting list. Children follow the current visitor rule of that house.

Getting around South Holland

Rotterdam Centraal and metro lines toward Hoogvliet are the usual public-transport pattern for PI Rotterdam. Confirm the stop on DJI’s map. The Hague Centraal and Hollands Spoor serve the government city. Leiden and Dordrecht are on the main rail spine.

Schiphol and Rotterdam The Hague Airport both serve the province. Drivers use the A15 toward Hoogvliet and the A4 or A13 toward The Hague. Port traffic and rush hour are the reasons visits are missed. Leave a margin, then walk the last part as the instructions describe. A Scheveningen hotel is the wrong base for a Hoogvliet visit, and the reverse mistake is just as common. Read the municipality on the letter before you book. Port traffic on the A15 is the usual reason slots are missed.
