België / Belgique prison guides

Belgian prisons: visit guides for Brussels, Antwerp and Liège

Belgium’s prison map is bilingual, overcrowded in the old maisons d’arrêt, and administratively split in ways that catch families out. A French-language court file does not automatically book you into an Antwerp visit slot. Belgium on this site is the three regions plus the ten provinces and Brussels — so families can separate Flemish, Walloon and Brussels geography.

Two languages, one overcrowded estate

Saint-Gilles / Sint-Gillis, Forest / Vorst and Berkendael sit inside Brussels and do a lot of remand work. Haren is the newer Brussels complex. Antwerp and Liège remain busy local prisons. Overcrowding is a political fact here; it also means visit slots vanish if you book late.

Written permission and ID rules are strict. We point to the official SPF pages per site rather than inventing a national timetable.

How Belgium is carved up on this site

Belgium (België / Belgique) is a separate country folder — not a tab on a mixed European roster, and not a US state code. The analogue of a US state here is the first-level unit: Regions and provinces. Belgium on this site is the three regions plus the ten provinces and Brussels — so families can separate Flemish, Walloon and Brussels geography. Antwerp the city is not automatically Antwerp province’s only house. Luxembourg the Belgian province is not the country Luxembourg. Open a region or province page when you already know the slice of Belgium; stay on this hub when you need the national rules, the official locator, and the list of those units.

SPF Justice / FOD Justitie runs maisons d’arrêt and the newer Haren complex. Saint-Gilles, Forest, Berkendael, Antwerp and Liège remain busy. Overcrowding is a political fact and a slot-scarcity fact. Facility articles under /belgium/ are building guides (address, operator, how a visit is booked). They are not who-is-inside tables. If a region or province has few prison guides, that is coverage on this site, not an empty prison system. Confusing Belgium’s Luxembourg province with the Grand Duchy, or bringing a Dutch DJI bezoek to Forest. Open /belgium/luxembourg versus /luxembourg — they are different countries.

Finding someone held in Belgium

Belgium does not publish a Google-style inmate spreadsheet. SPF Justice / FOD Justitie — prisons is the named official route (justice.belgium.be/). No public roster. The establishment on the court paper, or SPF Justice. Language of the file (Dutch or French) decides which desk you call. Belgium does not publish prisoner names. Confirm visits with the establishment. Language of the file (Dutch or French) matters for which desk you call.

A US reader used to sheriff websites will type “Belgium inmate search” and find nothing of the kind. That is the law. Court lists, Facebook groups and paid “worldwide jail” products are not SPF Justice / FOD Justitie — prisons. If the person was remanded overnight, reception can lag; if they were transferred out of the region or province you had in mind, the old desk is the wrong door. Use the region or province pages below to stop treating Brussels as a synonym for the whole country.

Visits, money and staying in touch

Visiting in Belgium is not a US-style walk-up. Written permission, ID, and a booked slot. Haren is not Saint-Gilles. A French-language Liège file does not book an Antwerp visit. Re-check hours; they move with overcrowding. Where a facility guide on this site quotes hours, they were taken from that establishment’s official page — re-check the day before you travel. This country hub will not invent a national timetable.

Dress codes, dog searches and what you may carry are house rules. Money and remote contact, where they exist, go through the official national channel — not a personal transfer to a cellmate. BRU airport, Midi/Zuid Eurostar, and Antwerp Centraal are not gates. Brussels houses are inner-city; Liège is a different region. Dutch plates do not waive Belgian parloir rules.

Travel, borders and the wrong-gate problem

BRU airport, Midi/Zuid Eurostar, and Antwerp Centraal are not gates. Brussels houses are inner-city; Liège is a different region. Dutch plates do not waive Belgian parloir rules. Print the gate address from the official prison page, not from a maps pin that only names Brussels or “Belgian prison”. Neighbouring countries on this site have their own URLs; a cheaper flight into the next capital is not a visiting permit.

Confusing Belgium’s Luxembourg province with the Grand Duchy, or bringing a Dutch DJI bezoek to Forest. Open /belgium/luxembourg versus /luxembourg — they are different countries. If you only know a town name, match it to a region or province first, then to a facility guide. Confusing one region or province of Belgium with another is the most common way to book the wrong visit.

Regions and provinces of Belgium — each on its own URL

Belgium is not mixed with the United States or with other European countries. Below is this country’s own first-level map (Regions and provinces). Open a unit for a longer article on how custody, visits and travel actually work there. US readers looking for a county inmate spreadsheet will not find one: Belgium does not publish that, and neither do we.

Regions and provinces

13 pages, written so Belgium does not collapse into a single mixed list. This is the analogue of opening a US state after you choose the United States.

Prison guides in Belgium

Each page is written for that establishment — address, how families actually locate someone, and how visits work — not a copied country intro.

Questions families actually ask

Is there a Belgian inmate search website?
No public roster. Contact the prison named on court papers or SPF Justice.
Does CurrentPrisonList list who is in jail in Belgium today?
No. Belgium pages are geographic and procedural guides. Belgium does not publish prisoner names. Confirm visits with the establishment. Language of the file (Dutch or French) matters for which desk you call.
Why does Belgium have Regions and provinces instead of one mixed list?
Belgium on this site is the three regions plus the ten provinces and Brussels — so families can separate Flemish, Walloon and Brussels geography. Antwerp the city is not automatically Antwerp province’s only house. Luxembourg the Belgian province is not the country Luxembourg. Mixing those units would be the same mistake as putting Ohio inmates under California.
How do I visit a prison in Belgium?
Identify the establishment through SPF Justice / FOD Justitie — prisons or the lawyer, get on the visitor list, and book that house. Written permission, ID, and a booked slot. Haren is not Saint-Gilles. A French-language Liège file does not book an Antwerp visit. Re-check hours; they move with overcrowding. Plan travel via Brussels only if the letter actually names a house there — the region or province pages exist because it often does not.

Other countries

Each country is a separate area of the site so US county rosters, UK prisons and European JVA / maison d’arrêt guides never share a URL.
