Belgian Limburg prisons: Hasselt, SPF Justice, and family visits

Belgian Limburg’s capital is Hasselt, between the Campine and the Dutch and German borders. It is not the Dutch province of Limburg and not Maastricht. SPF Justice runs any Belgian prison. Names are not published.

Limburg: how this area actually works

Hasselt is the provincial capital and the court centre. Genk, Sint-Truiden, Tongeren, and Beringen are the other towns, in a province that touches Dutch Limburg, Liège, Flemish Brabant, and Antwerp. The Hasselt prison is the federal establishment local reporting usually means. It is not a Dutch PI in Maastricht and not Prison Antwerpen, though both are close enough for a wrong morning. Families who live in Maastricht and work in Genk already cross that border for ordinary life. Custody does not follow the commute. If the letterhead is Belgian, use justice.belgium.be. If it is Dutch, use DJI. The word Limburg on a road sign will not choose for you.

The old mining towns and the Hoge Kempen national park create a map that looks rural and is full of ring roads. Police custody in Genk or Tongeren is not the prison visit. A person can be moved to Leuven, Antwerp, or another Flemish house after the first hearings. There is no provincial roster at the Hasselt government building. German relatives coming from Aachen are still in a Belgian process when the establishment is Belgian. Ask the lawyer for the country and the gate before you book a hotel on the Grote Markt. Bokrijk’s open-air museum is not an entrance. Bree and Lommel do not share one gate.

Authorisation, identification, and the establishment’s own timing rules apply. This page does not copy them. Dutch is the working language. A transfer out of the province cancels a Hasselt permission. Women and specialised regimes may be elsewhere. If papers name a prison in Dutch Limburg, stop using this guide and follow the Dutch province page. Community penalties served at home in Sint-Truiden are not a bezoek. Confirm that the person is in custody this week, then travel to the postcode, not to the province in general. Maaseik is not Hasselt.

Finding someone held in Limburg

Confirm the country, then the prison. Belgian Limburg is this page. Dutch Limburg, capital Maastricht, is a different service. Neither publishes a detainee list.

Hasselt, Genk, and Tongeren are not one gate. Use the establishment name. An Antwerp or Leuven transfer is a different province even though the language stays Dutch.

Visits and family practicalities

For a Belgian prison, follow justice.belgium.be. For a Dutch PI, follow dji.nl. Do not mix the forms. This guide prints no hours.

Bring the identification the establishment asked for. A permission for Hasselt will not open a Maastricht gate. If the person moves, start the request again with the new authority.

Getting around Limburg

Hasselt station connects toward Antwerp, Leuven, and Liège. Genk and Sint-Truiden have local rail. Tongeren sits toward the Liège side. Buses cover the mining towns. The prison approach is the official one, not the provincial square.

Eindhoven, Brussels, and Liège airports are the realistic flights. The E313 and E314 are the main roads. Border delays toward Maastricht or Aachen are unpredictable. A hotel in the Dutch city is the wrong base for a Belgian gate. Read the country on the letter before you pay. A Genk hotel is wrong for a Leuven gate, and a Hasselt hotel is wrong for Maastricht. Keep the postcode with the permission. Tongeren’s Roman square is not the establishment, and a Saturday market will not hold a slot for you either today. Leave before the E314 fills.

Questions families actually ask

Is this the Limburg whose capital is Maastricht?
No. Maastricht is the capital of Dutch Limburg. Belgian Limburg’s capital is Hasselt, and its prisons follow SPF Justice.
Can I search Hasselt inmates online?
No. Belgium does not publish a prisoner list. Confirm placement officially or through the lawyer.
Will a Genk case stay in Hasselt?
Sometimes, and often not. SPF Justice can place the person in another Flemish prison. Follow the establishment named in the papers.
