Namur: how this area actually works
The city of Namur holds the provincial government, the Walloon parliament, and the courts, under the citadel and between the rivers. Andenne, Dinant, Ciney, Philippeville, and Gembloux are the other towns families drive. Andenne is the locality associated with a major prison serving this part of Wallonia. It is not the citadel, which is a tourist fortress, and not the regional parliament. A walk up to the citadel viewpoint will not become a visit. Use the establishment named on SPF papers. Philippeville and Dinant have their own distances. A person arrested in Dinant may be placed at Andenne or in another Walloon house. Police cells are not that placement.
Because Namur is the regional capital, relatives assume every Walloon case comes here. Hainaut, Liège, Luxembourg province, and Walloon Brabant have their own establishments. justice.belgium.be will not sort that with a surname search. The Walloon public service will not either. French is the working language. A Flemish file in Dutch is a clue that you may be in the wrong region, but only the establishment name is proof. Transfers to Lantin or Ittre are common enough to ask the lawyer the week you travel. The Meuse towpath is not a directions app.
Visits require authorisation and identification. River-city traffic and the junction of two valleys make the last kilometre slow at commuting time. This page does not copy hours. Women and specialised regimes may be outside the province. A permission for Andenne does not open a Namur court office, and a court office does not become a visiting room on the day. If the person has been released to an address in Jambes or Salzinnes, confirm that before you keep the hotel. Community measures are not custody. The province page is here so you can plan roads once the gate is known.
Finding someone held in Namur
Ask SPF Justice or the lawyer whether the establishment is in this province. Namur the city, Namur the province, and Wallonia the region are three scales. None of them is a detainee list.
The citadel is not the prison. Andenne is a different town from Namur. Match the locality on the letter before you tell anyone which station to use.
Visits and family practicalities
Follow justice.belgium.be for the named prison. Authorisation is specific. This guide does not publish a timetable or a direct line.
Bring identification. A family slot and a lawyer slot are different. If the person moves to another Walloon prison, the Namur-area permission ends. Rebook only through the new establishment.
Getting around Namur
Namur station connects toward Brussels, Luxembourg province, and Liège. Dinant is a local line along the Meuse. Andenne has its own rail stop and still needs the official last step to the establishment. Gembloux sits toward the Brabant side.
Drivers use the E411 and the river roads. Brussels-Midi is the usual interchange for anyone coming from Flanders. A hotel under the citadel is the wrong base when the gate is in Andenne. Read the town, leave margin for valley traffic, and keep the French spelling of the establishment. Ciney, Couvin, and Walcourt are not Andenne. A citadel view does not become a visiting hour, so book the hotel for the town on the letter. Philippeville is not Dinant, and Gembloux is not the citadel above the rivers. Book only after the town is certain, and leave before valley traffic builds.
