East Flanders prisons: Ghent, SPF Justice, and family visits

East Flanders runs from Ghent to the Scheldt towns and the Dutch border at Zeeland, with the provincial capital in Ghent. Federal prisons serve the courts. SPF Justice does not publish names.

East Flanders: how this area actually works

Ghent is the capital, the university city, and the main court centre. Aalst, Sint-Niklaas, Dendermonde, Oudenaarde, and Lokeren fill the rest of a province squeezed between Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Hainaut, West Flanders, and the Netherlands. The Ghent prison on the Nieuwewandeling is the establishment local families mean when they say the city jail. It is a federal SPF house, not a municipal lockup under the belfry. Dendermonde and other arrondissements have their own judicial rhythm and can still send people to Ghent or to another Flemish prison. Police cells overnight are not that visit. Read the establishment on the letter before you trust a headline that only says Ghent.

The port of Ghent and the canal to Terneuzen pull Dutch relatives in from Zeeland. They are still in a Belgian legal process if the prison is Belgian. A Dutch PI is a different website and a different approval. justice.belgium.be will not search a name. The provincial government in the old city will not either. Students and festival crowds make the centre look like a place where you could ask at random. You cannot. Authorisation is arranged ahead. French-language papers from a Brussels lawyer should be matched to the Dutch-speaking desk this province actually uses. Ask the counsel which language the file is in.

Visits require permission, identification, and punctuality. The centre of Ghent is medieval and slow. A gate on a ring-road approach is a different walk from the Graslei. Women and specialised placements may be outside the province. A transfer to Antwerp, Bruges, or Leuven replaces every Ghent arrangement. This page does not claim a public count of people inside. If the person is in Haren, use the Brussels guide. If the sentence is being served in the community, there is no prison visit to book. Confirm that custody is current before you pay for a hotel by the Leie.

Finding someone held in East Flanders

Use SPF Justice or the lawyer. East Flanders is the province of many local cases and not always the province of the cell. There is no detainee index.

Nieuwewandeling is a Ghent address associated with the prison. It is not a guess you should make if the letter names another town. Match the paper, then travel.

Visits and family practicalities

Read the official visitor guidance for the named establishment. This page does not copy hours. Overcrowding changes what last month’s screenshot showed.

Bring identification that matches the authorisation. A family visit and a lawyer visit are different. Children follow the establishment’s current rule. If the slot is cancelled, only the prison can offer another.

Getting around East Flanders

Gent-Sint-Pieters is the main station, with trains toward Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp. Gent-Dampoort serves the northeast side. Sint-Niklaas, Aalst, and Dendermonde have frequent stops. Local trams and buses do the last part inside Ghent. Use the address on the letter.

The E17 and E40 cross the province. Dutch relatives use the tunnel and the roads from Zeeland. Festival weekends fill hotels and slow the ring. A room by the Korenmarkt is charming and useless if the gate is elsewhere in Flanders. Check the town before you book. Lokeren, Eeklo, and Zottegem are in the province and still not a reason to skip the postcode on the letter. Ninove and Deinze are separate stops too. Check the town twice today, before the Ghent ring fills.
