Walloon Brabant prisons: Ittre, Wavre courts, and SPF Justice

Walloon Brabant is the small French-speaking province south of Brussels, capital Wavre. Ittre is the prison name families attach to this map. SPF Justice does not publish a list of people held there.

Walloon Brabant: how this area actually works

Wavre is the provincial capital, a commuter city more than a postcard. Nivelles, Jodoigne, Braine-l’Alleud, and Ottignies complete a province squeezed between Brussels, Hainaut, Namur, and Liège. Ittre is the locality of a major prison, and Nivelles has long been part of the same conversation about where Brussels and Brabant cases are held. These are federal SPF establishments, French-speaking in administration, and not Leuven’s prisons in Flemish Brabant on the other side of the capital. Families treat “Brabant” as one word. It is two provinces and two languages, plus the Brussels region in between. The letter has to say Ittre, Nivelles, Leuven, or Haren. The word Brabant cannot.

Waterloo’s battlefield and Louvain-la-Neuve’s university draw the wrong pins. Neither is a gate. Police custody in Wavre or Braine is not the prison. A person arrested in the province may be placed at Ittre or moved into a Brussels maison d’arrêt, or onward to another Walloon house. justice.belgium.be will not search a surname. The provincial offices will not either. Because the province is small, relatives arrive without authorisation, assuming proximity equals permission. It does not. Ask the lawyer which establishment is current this week. A transfer from Ittre to Saint-Gilles is a change of region as well as a change of gate.

Visits need written permission and identification. Commuter traffic on the Brussels side of the province wipes out tight slots. This page does not copy hours. Women and specialised regimes may be elsewhere. An Ittre authorisation is useless at Nivelles if the papers name Nivelles, and useless in Leuven across the language line. If the person is released to an address in Rixensart or Court-Saint-Étienne, confirm release before you keep a hotel in Wavre. The province is here for roads and for the French-speaking Brabant distinction. It is not a roster.

Finding someone held in Walloon Brabant

Confirm the establishment with SPF Justice or counsel. Walloon Brabant is not Flemish Brabant and not Brussels. There is no public inmate search for any of the three.

Ittre and Nivelles are different localities. Leuven is in the other Brabant. Haren and Saint-Gilles are in Brussels. Match the name before you buy the train ticket.

Visits and family practicalities

Use justice.belgium.be for the named prison. Permissions do not cross from Ittre to a Brussels house. This guide prints no timetable.

Bring identification. Ring-road delays are common and not accepted as a reason to enter late. If the slot is cancelled, only the establishment can replace it. Lawyers do not share family places.

Getting around Walloon Brabant

Ottignies and Wavre sit on lines south of Brussels. Nivelles has its own station. Ittre is a local approach from the Nivelles side, best read from official directions rather than from a battlefield pin at Waterloo. Brussels-Midi is the usual long-distance interchange.

Drivers use the ring and the E19 toward Mons. A hotel in central Brussels is tempting and wrong when the gate is in Ittre. A Wavre hotel is wrong for Saint-Gilles. Read the postcode. Match days and university traffic at Louvain-la-Neuve both slow local buses. Jodoigne, Genappe, and Tubize are in this small province and still not the same gate. Read the locality before you leave Brussels-Midi. Waterloo’s battlefield is a tourist pin, not a gate, and a Wavre hotel fails when the papers say Nivelles.

Questions families actually ask

Is Walloon Brabant the same as Flemish Brabant?
No. Walloon Brabant is French-speaking, capital Wavre. Flemish Brabant is Dutch-speaking, capital Leuven. Brussels sits between them as its own region.
Can I search Ittre inmates online?
No. Belgium does not publish detainee names. SPF Justice or the lawyer confirms placement.
Does a case south of Brussels stay out of the capital’s prisons?
Not always. Placement may be Ittre, Nivelles, or a Brussels prison such as Haren. Follow the establishment on the papers.
