Casa circondariale versus casa di reclusione
If someone has just left a tribunal in Rome, the first stop is often Regina Coeli or Rebibbia, not a northern sentenced house. Milan’s San Vittore plays the same local role. Opera and Bollate are a different commute and a different regime. Using one “Italian prison” landing page for all of them is how people miss a colloquio slot.
Permits, ID and the prenotazione system are istituto-specific. We keep those facts on the facility article.
How Italy is carved up on this site
Italy (Italia) is a separate country folder — not a tab on a mixed European roster, and not a US state code. The analogue of a US state here is the first-level unit: Regioni. Italy’s 20 regioni are the map: Lazio is not Lombardy, Campania is not Sicily. A regione page is the analogue of a US state here. Provinces and comuni are not separate prison hubs on this site — first-level only. Open a regione page when you already know the slice of Italy; stay on this hub when you need the national rules, the official locator, and the list of those units.
DAP runs casa circondariale (local/remand) and casa di reclusione (sentenced). Regina Coeli, Rebibbia, San Vittore, Opera, Poggioreale and Bollate are different istituti with different prenotazione systems. Facility articles under /italy/ are building guides (address, operator, how a visit is booked). They are not who-is-inside tables. If a regione has few prison guides, that is coverage on this site, not an empty prison system. Treating ‘Italian prison’ as one landing page, or confusing Vatican rumours with DAP. Open the regione, then the istituto guide.
Finding someone held in Italy
Italy does not publish a Google-style inmate spreadsheet. Dipartimento dell’Amministrazione Penitenziaria is the named official route (www.giustizia.it/). No public roll. The istituto, DAP, or legal counsel. A Rome tribunal does not mean Regina Coeli next week — Rebibbia is a common second answer. Italian prisons do not publish detainee lists. Colloqui must be authorised. Confirm with the istituto or the lawyer.
A US reader used to sheriff websites will type “Italy inmate search” and find nothing of the kind. That is the law. Court lists, Facebook groups and paid “worldwide jail” products are not Dipartimento dell’Amministrazione Penitenziaria. If the person was remanded overnight, reception can lag; if they were transferred out of the regione you had in mind, the old desk is the wrong door. Use the regione pages below to stop treating Rome as a synonym for the whole country.
Visits, money and staying in touch
Visiting in Italy is not a US-style walk-up. Colloqui must be authorised. ID and the prenotazione for that house. Do not copy a San Vittore slot onto Opera. Money follows DAP channels. Where a facility guide on this site quotes hours, they were taken from that establishment’s official page — re-check the day before you travel. This country hub will not invent a national timetable.
Dress codes, dog searches and what you may carry are house rules. Money and remote contact, where they exist, go through the official national channel — not a personal transfer to a cellmate. FCO and CIA for Lazio; MXP and LIN for Lombardy; NAP for Poggioreale. City names on tourist maps are not gates. Opera is a Milan-south commute, not the Duomo.
Travel, borders and the wrong-gate problem
FCO and CIA for Lazio; MXP and LIN for Lombardy; NAP for Poggioreale. City names on tourist maps are not gates. Opera is a Milan-south commute, not the Duomo. Print the gate address from the official prison page, not from a maps pin that only names Rome or “Italian prison”. Neighbouring countries on this site have their own URLs; a cheaper flight into the next capital is not a visiting permit.
Treating ‘Italian prison’ as one landing page, or confusing Vatican rumours with DAP. Open the regione, then the istituto guide. If you only know a town name, match it to a regione first, then to a facility guide. Confusing one regione of Italy with another is the most common way to book the wrong visit.
Regioni of Italy — each on its own URL
Italy is not mixed with the United States or with other European countries. Below is this country’s own first-level map (Regioni). Open a unit for a longer article on how custody, visits and travel actually work there. US readers looking for a county inmate spreadsheet will not find one: Italy does not publish that, and neither do we.
