Sicily is an island region, capital Palermo. Catania, Messina, Syracuse, Ragusa, Trapani, Agrigento, Caltanissetta, and Enna are the other provincial seats. DAP runs the istituti. There is no public list of names.

Sicily: how this area actually works

Palermo is the regional capital and a court city large enough that families still confuse one istituto with another. Catania faces Etna, Messina faces the strait, and the south and the interior are separate journeys. A person who leaves a Palermitan tribunal is not automatically inside one casa circondariale. Police custody is not the colloquio. DAP may keep someone on the island or, less often, move them to the mainland after classification. giustizia.it will not search a surname. Ask the lawyer which address is current before you book a room in the centro storico. The theatres and the markets are not gates. Nine provinces do not share a visiting room.

Families treat Sicily as one prison because it is one island. It is not. A permission for Palermo does not open Catania, and a permission for Messina does not open Agrigento. Mainland papers for Calabria die at the strait. Women and young people may be placed far from the court of arrest. This page is not a roll of detenuti. If the papers name Reggio Calabria, go back to the Calabria guide and do not board the ferry. Confirm the week of travel. A release to an address in Trapani or Siracusa ends the prison visit. The regional offices will not search a surname.

Colloqui need authorisation and identification. This guide copies no orario. Island roads and summer heat both make lateness ordinary, and the gate does not negotiate it. Money and parcels follow DAP rules for that istituto. If the person moves to another province, start again. Use the municipality on the letter. A postcard of Taormina will not get you through the door, and a hotel on the sea at Cefalù is useless when the istituto is in Palermo, Catania, or Enna. Read the street before you leave the station. Ragusa does not share that desk. Confirm the province on the letter before you pay today.

Follow giustizia.it for the named istituto. Bring identification. This page lists no hours.

A Palermo permission does not open Catania. Lawyers use their own route. If the slot is cancelled, only the istituto can rebook it.

Getting around Sicily

Palermo and Catania have airports and main stations. Messina is the rail head for the strait. Ferries and hydrofoils cross from Villa San Giovanni and Reggio. The istituto is not the port. Use official directions, not a cruise pin.

Drivers use the motorways along the coasts and the slower roads inland to Enna. A hotel in Taormina or on a beach is the wrong base unless the papers name that town. Calabria is another region. Leave margin for summer traffic and for the interior. Read the municipality twice before you pay, and do not follow a tour map to the gate. Agrigento’s temples are not the visit. Leave the afternoon clear of the sights, and keep the permission with the postcode before evening heat. Syracuse is not Catania. Do not sleep in Reggio because the ferry looks easy today. The Aeolian islands are not a Palermitan gate. Enna is inland. Leave a spare hour in the heat today.

Not always. DAP may use another provincial istituto. Follow the city on the papers.

No. Calabria and Sicily are different regions. The letter has to name the istituto you are visiting.
