Buskerud county: Drammen, Ringerike and prison visits

Buskerud is its own fylke again from 2024, after the Viken years. Drammen is the centre. Kongsberg, Hønefoss and the Hallingdal towns run west into the mountains. The county touches the Oslofjord at Drammen and feels, wrongly, like a suburb of the capital. Kriminalomsorgen holds prisoners. Drammen municipality does not. Ringerike fengsel, on the Ringerike side of the county near Hønefoss, is a specific establishment. It is not Oslo fengsel and it is not Ila.

Buskerud: how this area actually works

Drammen has its own courts and a rebuilt city centre that visitors confuse with Oslo because the train is short. Kongsberg is a further industrial town. Hønefoss is the Ringerike hub. Hallingdal is a mountain corridor toward Geilo, a ski trip rather than a legal one. Appeals go to Borgarting in Oslo. A morning there and a prison afternoon in Hallingdal is not a commuter plan. The county council cannot confirm names. An old webpage that still says Viken is not a map.

Ringerike fengsel serves a different role from the high-security units families have seen in the news. Ila is in Bærum, which is Akershus, even if Bærum feels close to northern Buskerud. Oslo fengsel is in Oslo county. Halden is in Østfold. A Buskerud case can land in any of them after classification, or stay at a unit in this fylke if the papers say so. Do not pick the most famous Norwegian prison and drive there. Pick the one named.

Mountain weeks in Hallingdal fill trains that a visit also needs. Those are unrelated bookings. Probation in Drammen is not custody. If frivård-style community supervision, in Norwegian terms a samfunnsstraff or probation follow-up, is the actual status, ask what contact is allowed instead of demanding a besøk at a fengsel. If a transfer to Ila or Halden is signed, leave Buskerud. The Drammen riverfront will not become the gate by persistence.

Finding someone held in Buskerud

Find the establishment through kriminalomsorgen.no, the lawyer, or an approved relative. Drammen police will not resolve a family disagreement about Ringerike versus Ila. Bring identity details and the case number. Embassies explain the service to foreign families and do not receive each movement between Hønefoss and Bærum. Recheck if your only source is a message that still says the person is “somewhere in Viken.” Viken is not a location anymore.

Write Drammen, Hønefoss, Kongsberg, or another fylke as the destination. Foreign visitors should get the prison’s name spelled by the lawyer, because English nicknames for Norwegian prisons collide. Ringerike is not Ila. If forvaring is the regime, ask whether Ila is the establishment before you book Hønefoss. If the letter already says Ringerike fengsel, do not “upgrade” the trip to Halden because a documentary was more memorable.

Visits and family practicalities

Besøk approval is personal and tied to one establishment. Book as that site instructs on kriminalomsorgen.no. High-security rules do not apply to every prison, and local rules do not apply to Ila. This page lists no hours for Ringerike or for anywhere else. A single timetable labelled Buskerud would be wrong even if the hours were real, because the county is not one gate.

Passport, children’s consent and interpreter requests follow the establishment. Norwegian is the working language. English that worked in a Drammen business hotel does not waive a ban on phones. Read the current sheet. If you prepared for Ila and the approval says a different prison, repack. Gifts bought on a Hallingdal weekend are not a special category. They are still items the gate can refuse.

Getting around Buskerud

Trains from Oslo S to Drammen are frequent and then split toward Kongsberg or toward Hønefoss and Bergen. Those are different lines. Gardermoen is in Akershus, not a Drammen local airport. Use Kriminalomsorgen’s directions to Ringerike fengsel if that is the gate. It is not the Drammen station clock. Mountain buses up Hallingdal are irrelevant unless the papers put the person there, which you should verify rather than hope.

Commuter peaks between Drammen and Oslo, and winter roads toward Hønefoss and the valley, break same-day plans. An appeal in Oslo and a Ringerike visit can be combined only with slack. Stay nearer Hønefoss than the fjord if that is the establishment. Add identification time. If the person is at Ila, switch to the Akershus plan and the Bærum approach. Buskerud restored as a fylke is a map fact. It is not a promise that the prisoner stayed inside it.

Questions families actually ask

Is Ringerike fengsel the same as Ila?
No. Ringerike fengsel is in the Ringerike area of Buskerud. Ila is in Bærum, in Akershus. Both are Kriminalomsorgen and they are different gates, with different regimes. Read the establishment name.
Is Buskerud part of Oslo?
No. It is a neighbouring fylke, restored in 2024 when Viken was dissolved. Drammen is close to Oslo by train and still not Oslo fengsel. Check which county and which prison the letter names.
Does Drammen have a public inmate list?
No. Kriminalomsorgen does not publish names. Use the official channel or a lawyer.

Other Fylker in Norway

county · KristiansandAgderAgderAgder is the southern fylke, merged from the old east and west Agder counties and kept that way when other mergers were undone in 2024. Kristiansand is the centre. Arendal, Mandal, Grimstad and Flekkefjord mark a coast that looks compact and drives long. Kriminalomsorgen holds prisoners and does not publish names. A Kristiansand arrest is not a promise of a Kristiansand sentence, and a summer cabin in Grimstad is not a visiting plan.Open this area →county · LillestrømAkershusAkershusAkershus surrounds Oslo and, since the 2024 undo of the short-lived Viken merger, is again its own fylke, with Lillestrøm as the county centre. It runs from Eidsvoll and Ullensaker, where Gardermoen sits, through Lørenskog and Ski country down to the Oslofjord towns, and west into Bærum. Kriminalomsorgen holds prisoners. The county council does not. Ila fengsel in Bærum and Ullersmo in Ullensaker are the names families of this region actually need, and neither is a public list of people.Open this area →county · VadsøFinnmarkFinnmarkFinnmark is its own fylke again from 2024, seated in Vadsø, with Alta, Hammerfest, Kirkenes and the inland Sami municipalities spread across distances that defeat a single-day plan. The Finnish border and the Russian border are real geography. They are not a shared prison system. Kriminalomsorgen does not publish names. Local custody capacity is not something to assume from a news dateline. Many sentenced prisoners are held far to the south, and you must confirm that before you fly to the Arctic.Open this area →county · HamarInnlandetInnlandetInnlandet is the inland fylke formed from Hedmark and Oppland, and unlike Viken it stayed merged. Hamar is the county centre. Lillehammer, Gjøvik, Elverum and Kongsvinger are the other names on family itineraries. There is no sea coast. There is a great deal of winter. Kriminalomsorgen runs custody anywhere a person from these valleys is actually held, and it does not publish names. An old Oppland or Hedmark habit of speech is not a placement.Open this area →county · MoldeMøre og RomsdalMøre og RomsdalMøre og Romsdal is three towns that refuse to be one trip: Molde is the county centre, Ålesund is the larger coastal city, and Kristiansund sits on islands further north. Ferries and the Atlantic Road make the map look like a postcard. Kriminalomsorgen holds people without publishing names. A family that lands in Ålesund for a Molde establishment, or drives the scenic road for a person who has already been moved south, is using tourism as a placement system.Open this area →county · BodøNordlandNordlandNordland is a long coastal fylke, seated in Bodø, reaching Narvik and the Ofoten railway toward Sweden, Mo i Rana, Sandnessjøen and the Lofoten towns such as Svolvær. It is several flights, not a county you cross after lunch. Kriminalomsorgen does not publish names. A Lofoten arrest, a Bodø remand and a southern anstalt sentence can be three different countries in the mind of a tired family, and only one of them is the current gate.Open this area →county · OsloOsloOsloOslo is both a city and its own county, which is why this page uses the slug oslo-county: the prison Oslo fengsel already occupies the shorter name. Kriminalomsorgen, the Norwegian Correctional Service, runs custody. There is no sheriff’s jail and no public name list. Families meet Oslo fengsel for much of the capital’s remand and local serving, then learn that high-security Ila sits in neighbouring Akershus and Halden sits in Østfold. This guide separates those gates and says nothing about a timetable.Open this area →county · SarpsborgØstfoldØstfoldØstfold is the fylke between Oslo and Sweden, restored in 2024 when Viken was undone. Sarpsborg is the county centre. Fredrikstad, Moss and Halden are the towns families actually say aloud. Halden fengsel, the high-security prison, is here, close to the border and famous in photographs. Fame is not a roster. Kriminalomsorgen publishes no names. A Swedish relative who drives over the border still has to be approved like anyone else, and still has to be at the right gate.Open this area →county · StavangerRogalandRogalandRogaland faces the North Sea, seated in Stavanger, with Sandnes joined to it in practice, Haugesund to the north, and Egersund to the south. Oil and ferry geography dominate how people arrive. They do not dominate where a prisoner sits. Kriminalomsorgen runs fengsler and publishes no names. Åna fengsel, in the south of the county, is a closed prison families need to distinguish from anything in central Stavanger. A downtown hotel is not a head start.Open this area →county · SkienTelemarkTelemarkTelemark is its own fylke again from 2024, seated in Skien, with Porsgrunn sharing the Grenland towns and Notodden, Rjukan and the inland valleys running toward the mountains. Visitors fold it into Vestfold because they were one county for a few years. They are not one county now, and they are not one prison. Kriminalomsorgen holds people under national rules and does not publish names. A Skien case can be served far from Grenland once classification is finished.Open this area →county · TromsøTromsTromsTroms is its own fylke again from 2024, after the Troms og Finnmark merger was undone. Tromsø is the centre. Harstad, Finnsnes and the inland valleys toward the Swedish and Finnish borders are not city districts. Kriminalomsorgen holds people and does not publish names. Families still say “Troms og Finnmark” because the map changed recently. The prison does not. A Finnmark placement and a Tromsø placement are different counties and different flights.Open this area →county · SteinkjerTrøndelagTrøndelagTrøndelag stayed merged, north and south together, when some fylker were restored in 2024. The county administration is in Steinkjer. The city is Trondheim. Families book the city and forget the seat, or book the seat and forget that Trondheim fengsel is a specific establishment in the city, not a synonym for every prisoner whose case touched the region. Kriminalomsorgen publishes no names. Old words Sør-Trøndelag and Nord-Trøndelag are not addresses.Open this area →
