Rogaland: how this area actually works
Stavanger tingrett and the courts serving Haugesund cover different parts of a county that is awkward to cross. Appeals go to Gulating lagmannsrett in Bergen, which is another fylke, Vestland, across fjords and ferries or a long road. A hearing in Bergen and a prison in Rogaland are a two-day thought at minimum. The county council cannot confirm a detainee. An oil-company security desk cannot either, even when the employer is why the family is in Norway.
Åna is not Stavanger city, and Stavanger city is not every placement that begins with a Rogaland arrest. Remand may be a local fengsel unit named on the warrant. A later classification can move someone to another region entirely. Do not treat “the Stavanger prison” as a single pin. If the letter says Åna, aim south in the county. If it says a Bergen-side establishment, you are in Vestland. If it says Halden or Ila, you are crossing most of southern Norway.
Haugesund and Stavanger are not a shared afternoon. People underestimate the Boknafjord and the islands between them. Probation in Stavanger is community supervision, not a wing of Åna. If that is the status, stop planning a gate. If a transfer is dated during the week you booked a North Sea ferry, change the ferry. Recheck placement. Industrial shift patterns in this county are not the prison’s calendar.
Finding someone held in Rogaland
Use kriminalomsorgen.no, the lawyer, or an approved contact. Stavanger police will not read a list. Bring the date of birth and case number. Embassies help foreign families, who are common here, understand the channel. They are not notified when someone moves from a city unit to Åna or out of the county. A news brief about an arrest at a yard or a harbour goes stale. Ask again.
Write Åna, Stavanger, Haugesund, or another fylke at the top of the itinerary. Foreign visitors should get the Norwegian spelling of the establishment. English nicknames collide with other prisons. If you are attending Gulating in Bergen, ask whether the visit is even in Rogaland this week. Families waste a hire car on the ferry because nobody separated the appeal from the fengsel.
Visits and family practicalities
Besøk is approved person by person. Closed conditions at a prison like Åna are not a casual drop-in after a shift. Book as the establishment describes. This page has no hours. A roster of “Stavanger visiting times” that does not name the establishment is noise. Check the live instruction, then the ferry or the flight, in that order.
Bring a passport. Children’s permission and guardian consent follow the establishment. Norwegian is the working language even in a city used to English in the energy sector. Request an interpreter if you need one. Do not assume workplace English is the prison’s rule. Read the property sheet. A phone you use for the hire car is still a phone at the gate.
Getting around Rogaland
Stavanger Airport at Sola is west of the city, not at Åna. Haugesund has its own airport. Trains link Stavanger and Egersund. The road south toward Åna is a drive you should time with Kriminalomsorgen’s directions, not with a pin on the oil museum. Ferries to Denmark or along the coast are a route only if your ticket actually needs them. They are not a shortcut to a prison you have not identified.
Tunnel traffic, winter storms on the North Sea coast, and a Bergen hearing on the same day are the ways visits fail after a successful landing at Sola. Stay near the establishment. If that is Åna, do not insist on a Stavanger harbour hotel unless the timing is honest. Add identification time. If the person is in Vestland or in eastern Norway, retarget before you collect a car you will drive in the wrong direction for five hours.
