Norge prison guides

Norwegian prisons: Kriminalomsorgen guides, Halden, Oslo and visits

Norway’s estate is small, spread out, and famous abroad for Halden. Oslo fengsel still does the capital’s heavy lifting. There is no public occupancy list, and a fjord-side open prison is not where remand from Oslo District Court lands. Norway’s fylker (including Oslo as a county-level unit on its own URL, collision-safe as oslo-county versus the Oslo prison guide) are the map.

High-security, open prisons, and long travel

Halden sits near the Swedish border. Ila and Ullersmo serve Eastern Norway’s high-security need. Bastøy is an open island prison with a ferry, not a drop-in. Families flying into Oslo Gardermoen still have to match the person to the actual fengsel.

How Norway is carved up on this site

Norway (Norge) is a separate country folder — not a tab on a mixed European roster, and not a US state code. The analogue of a US state here is the first-level unit: Fylker. Norway’s fylker (including Oslo as a county-level unit on its own URL, collision-safe as oslo-county versus the Oslo prison guide) are the map. Vestland is not Oslo. Finnmark is a different travel day. Svalbard is not a mainland fylke page. Open a fylke page when you already know the slice of Norway; stay on this hub when you need the national rules, the official locator, and the list of those units.

Kriminalomsorgen runs high-security, ordinary and open fengsler. Oslo fengsel does capital remand; Halden sits near Sweden; Ila and Ullersmo are Eastern Norway high-security; Bastøy is an island open prison with a ferry. Facility articles under /norway/ are building guides (address, operator, how a visit is booked). They are not who-is-inside tables. If a fylke has few prison guides, that is coverage on this site, not an empty prison system. Treating Halden’s international reputation as the default Oslo placement, or using a Swedish anstalt booking at a Norwegian gate.

Finding someone held in Norway

Norway does not publish a Google-style inmate spreadsheet. Kriminalomsorgen is the named official route (www.kriminalomsorgen.no/). No public occupancy list. Kriminalomsorgen or the fengsel. A district-court night in Oslo is not Halden. Norway does not publish prisoner names. Confirm visits with Kriminalomsorgen or the fengsel.

A US reader used to sheriff websites will type “Norway inmate search” and find nothing of the kind. That is the law. Court lists, Facebook groups and paid “worldwide jail” products are not Kriminalomsorgen. If the person was remanded overnight, reception can lag; if they were transferred out of the fylke you had in mind, the old desk is the wrong door. Use the fylke pages below to stop treating Oslo as a synonym for the whole country.

Visits, money and staying in touch

Visiting in Norway is not a US-style walk-up. Book with that fengsel. ID, and the list. Open prisons are not drop-ins. Money follows Kriminalomsorgen, not a postal order to the wing. Where a facility guide on this site quotes hours, they were taken from that establishment’s official page — re-check the day before you travel. This country hub will not invent a national timetable.

Dress codes, dog searches and what you may carry are house rules. Money and remote contact, where they exist, go through the official national channel — not a personal transfer to a cellmate. OSL is not Oslo fengsel. Halden is a Swedish-border rail. Winter and ferries cancel more visits than the desk does. Swedish families still need Norwegian permission.

Travel, borders and the wrong-gate problem

OSL is not Oslo fengsel. Halden is a Swedish-border rail. Winter and ferries cancel more visits than the desk does. Swedish families still need Norwegian permission. Print the gate address from the official prison page, not from a maps pin that only names Oslo or “Norwegian prison”. Neighbouring countries on this site have their own URLs; a cheaper flight into the next capital is not a visiting permit.

Treating Halden’s international reputation as the default Oslo placement, or using a Swedish anstalt booking at a Norwegian gate. If you only know a town name, match it to a fylke first, then to a facility guide. Confusing one fylke of Norway with another is the most common way to book the wrong visit.

Fylker of Norway — each on its own URL

Norway is not mixed with the United States or with other European countries. Below is this country’s own first-level map (Fylker). Open a unit for a longer article on how custody, visits and travel actually work there. US readers looking for a county inmate spreadsheet will not find one: Norway does not publish that, and neither do we.

Fylker

15 pages, written so Norway does not collapse into a single mixed list. This is the analogue of opening a US state after you choose the United States.

county · KristiansandAgderAgderAgder is the southern fylke, merged from the old east and west Agder counties and kept that way when other mergers were undone in 2024. Kristiansand is the centre. Arendal, Mandal, Grimstad and Flekkefjord mark a coast that looks compact and drives long. Kriminalomsorgen holds prisoners and does not publish names. A Kristiansand arrest is not a promise of a Kristiansand sentence, and a summer cabin in Grimstad is not a visiting plan.Open this area →county · LillestrømAkershusAkershusAkershus surrounds Oslo and, since the 2024 undo of the short-lived Viken merger, is again its own fylke, with Lillestrøm as the county centre. It runs from Eidsvoll and Ullensaker, where Gardermoen sits, through Lørenskog and Ski country down to the Oslofjord towns, and west into Bærum. Kriminalomsorgen holds prisoners. The county council does not. Ila fengsel in Bærum and Ullersmo in Ullensaker are the names families of this region actually need, and neither is a public list of people.Open this area →county · DrammenBuskerudBuskerudBuskerud is its own fylke again from 2024, after the Viken years. Drammen is the centre. Kongsberg, Hønefoss and the Hallingdal towns run west into the mountains. The county touches the Oslofjord at Drammen and feels, wrongly, like a suburb of the capital. Kriminalomsorgen holds prisoners. Drammen municipality does not. Ringerike fengsel, on the Ringerike side of the county near Hønefoss, is a specific establishment. It is not Oslo fengsel and it is not Ila.Open this area →county · VadsøFinnmarkFinnmarkFinnmark is its own fylke again from 2024, seated in Vadsø, with Alta, Hammerfest, Kirkenes and the inland Sami municipalities spread across distances that defeat a single-day plan. The Finnish border and the Russian border are real geography. They are not a shared prison system. Kriminalomsorgen does not publish names. Local custody capacity is not something to assume from a news dateline. Many sentenced prisoners are held far to the south, and you must confirm that before you fly to the Arctic.Open this area →county · HamarInnlandetInnlandetInnlandet is the inland fylke formed from Hedmark and Oppland, and unlike Viken it stayed merged. Hamar is the county centre. Lillehammer, Gjøvik, Elverum and Kongsvinger are the other names on family itineraries. There is no sea coast. There is a great deal of winter. Kriminalomsorgen runs custody anywhere a person from these valleys is actually held, and it does not publish names. An old Oppland or Hedmark habit of speech is not a placement.Open this area →county · MoldeMøre og RomsdalMøre og RomsdalMøre og Romsdal is three towns that refuse to be one trip: Molde is the county centre, Ålesund is the larger coastal city, and Kristiansund sits on islands further north. Ferries and the Atlantic Road make the map look like a postcard. Kriminalomsorgen holds people without publishing names. A family that lands in Ålesund for a Molde establishment, or drives the scenic road for a person who has already been moved south, is using tourism as a placement system.Open this area →county · BodøNordlandNordlandNordland is a long coastal fylke, seated in Bodø, reaching Narvik and the Ofoten railway toward Sweden, Mo i Rana, Sandnessjøen and the Lofoten towns such as Svolvær. It is several flights, not a county you cross after lunch. Kriminalomsorgen does not publish names. A Lofoten arrest, a Bodø remand and a southern anstalt sentence can be three different countries in the mind of a tired family, and only one of them is the current gate.Open this area →county · OsloOsloOsloOslo is both a city and its own county, which is why this page uses the slug oslo-county: the prison Oslo fengsel already occupies the shorter name. Kriminalomsorgen, the Norwegian Correctional Service, runs custody. There is no sheriff’s jail and no public name list. Families meet Oslo fengsel for much of the capital’s remand and local serving, then learn that high-security Ila sits in neighbouring Akershus and Halden sits in Østfold. This guide separates those gates and says nothing about a timetable.Open this area →county · SarpsborgØstfoldØstfoldØstfold is the fylke between Oslo and Sweden, restored in 2024 when Viken was undone. Sarpsborg is the county centre. Fredrikstad, Moss and Halden are the towns families actually say aloud. Halden fengsel, the high-security prison, is here, close to the border and famous in photographs. Fame is not a roster. Kriminalomsorgen publishes no names. A Swedish relative who drives over the border still has to be approved like anyone else, and still has to be at the right gate.Open this area →county · StavangerRogalandRogalandRogaland faces the North Sea, seated in Stavanger, with Sandnes joined to it in practice, Haugesund to the north, and Egersund to the south. Oil and ferry geography dominate how people arrive. They do not dominate where a prisoner sits. Kriminalomsorgen runs fengsler and publishes no names. Åna fengsel, in the south of the county, is a closed prison families need to distinguish from anything in central Stavanger. A downtown hotel is not a head start.Open this area →county · SkienTelemarkTelemarkTelemark is its own fylke again from 2024, seated in Skien, with Porsgrunn sharing the Grenland towns and Notodden, Rjukan and the inland valleys running toward the mountains. Visitors fold it into Vestfold because they were one county for a few years. They are not one county now, and they are not one prison. Kriminalomsorgen holds people under national rules and does not publish names. A Skien case can be served far from Grenland once classification is finished.Open this area →county · TromsøTromsTromsTroms is its own fylke again from 2024, after the Troms og Finnmark merger was undone. Tromsø is the centre. Harstad, Finnsnes and the inland valleys toward the Swedish and Finnish borders are not city districts. Kriminalomsorgen holds people and does not publish names. Families still say “Troms og Finnmark” because the map changed recently. The prison does not. A Finnmark placement and a Tromsø placement are different counties and different flights.Open this area →county · SteinkjerTrøndelagTrøndelagTrøndelag stayed merged, north and south together, when some fylker were restored in 2024. The county administration is in Steinkjer. The city is Trondheim. Families book the city and forget the seat, or book the seat and forget that Trondheim fengsel is a specific establishment in the city, not a synonym for every prisoner whose case touched the region. Kriminalomsorgen publishes no names. Old words Sør-Trøndelag and Nord-Trøndelag are not addresses.Open this area →county · TønsbergVestfoldVestfoldVestfold is the western Oslofjord county, restored in 2024 when it split again from Telemark. Tønsberg is the centre. Sandefjord, Larvik and Horten are the other coastal towns. Bastøy fengsel, on the island of Bastøy, is the establishment foreigners think they know from articles about low-security island life. Articles are not a roster, and an island regime is not Halden’s high-security regime. Kriminalomsorgen decides placement and does not publish names.Open this area →county · BergenVestlandVestlandVestland is the merged fylke of old Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane, kept together when some other mergers ended in 2024. Bergen is the city everyone means. The county administration has its weight there, while Sogn, Sunnfjord and the northern fjords remain long ferry days away. Førde and Sogndal are not Bergen neighbourhoods. Kriminalomsorgen does not publish names. A Bergen arrest and a placement in the northern half of the fylke are different journeys, and many placements leave the fylke entirely.Open this area →

Prison guides in Norway

Each page is written for that establishment — address, how families actually locate someone, and how visits work — not a copied country intro.

Questions families actually ask

Can I search Norwegian inmates online?
No. Contact Kriminalomsorgen. Placement is not a public record in the US-roster sense.
Does CurrentPrisonList list who is in jail in Norway today?
No. Norway pages are geographic and procedural guides. Norway does not publish prisoner names. Confirm visits with Kriminalomsorgen or the fengsel.
Why does Norway have Fylker instead of one mixed list?
Norway’s fylker (including Oslo as a county-level unit on its own URL, collision-safe as oslo-county versus the Oslo prison guide) are the map. Vestland is not Oslo. Finnmark is a different travel day. Svalbard is not a mainland fylke page. Mixing those units would be the same mistake as putting Ohio inmates under California.
How do I visit a prison in Norway?
Identify the establishment through Kriminalomsorgen or the lawyer, get on the visitor list, and book that house. Book with that fengsel. ID, and the list. Open prisons are not drop-ins. Money follows Kriminalomsorgen, not a postal order to the wing. Plan travel via Oslo only if the letter actually names a house there — the fylke pages exist because it often does not.
