Alba: how this area actually works
The Mureș valley, the Apuseni edge, and the Transylvanian plateau. Alba Iulia sits in the valley; Aiud is downriver. Cluj, Mureș, Sibiu, Hunedoara, and Bihor’s mountain edge. Alba is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Alba.
The citadel’s tourism, industry in the valley, and smaller towns. Sebeș is a working town beside the city. Union Day memory fills the citadel. ANP does not. Put Aiud in the plan for a concrete reason — the penitentiary town on the Mureș.
Alba Iulia matters here because it is the county seat and citadel city. Put Sebeș in the plan for a concrete reason — the industrial town south of Alba Iulia. The administrative centre is Alba Iulia. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Alba
Alba Iulia courts serve the county. Aiud is the penitentiary town people must separate from the citadel. Aiud’s penitentiary is a national ANP name. Alba Iulia is the court capital. A transfer further, including toward Bucharest, remains possible. Confirm. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Romania does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Alba can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. Blaj matters here because it is the small town east toward Târnava.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a penitentiary in Alba. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Touring the citadel in Alba Iulia when the gate is in Aiud. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Alba Iulia, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Put Câmpeni in the plan for a concrete reason — a town in the Apuseni, a different mountain direction.
Getting around Alba
The A10 and the valley roads. Aiud is a clear turn off the Mureș corridor. Both towns are on the rail map. Useful if you already know which. Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport is the usual international door, then a road or rail connection that depends on the institution.
Valley fog and ordinary winter. The mistake is the wrong town, not the pass. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Alba Iulia.
