Bacău: how this area actually works
The Siret corridor, the edge of the Eastern Carpathians, and a plain opening south. Onești is the southern industrial town. Neamț, Vaslui, Vrancea, and Harghita. Bacău is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Bacău.
Industry, the airport, and the valley. Bacău is a working city. Moldavian speech and a national ANP. The folklore is not the file. People heading for Bacău still need Bacău on the list: the county city.
Onești is the southern industrial town. People heading for Bacău still need Comănești on the list: a town toward the mountains. The administrative centre is Bacău. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Bacău
Bacău courts serve the county. Iași is a different județ. Confirm the ANP penitenciar. A local institution and a transfer to Iași, Jilava, or elsewhere are both possible. Onești is not automatically the gate. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Romania does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Bacău can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. Moinești is a town in the western hills.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a penitentiary in Bacău. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Continuing to Iași because Moldavia seemed like one city. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Bacău, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Bacău still need Buhuși on the list: a town north of Bacău.
Getting around Bacău
The north-south road through Moldavia. Clear and long. Bacău is a real junction. Use it if the town matches. Bacău Airport has some flights. Bucharest and Iași are the alternatives.
Valley fog and ordinary winter. The road south to Bucharest is a day. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Bacău.
