Dolj: custody, visits, and how placement works

Dolj County is Craiova, the city of Oltenia, a university and a car plant on the Jiu plain. It is the south-west’s capital and an ANP city, not a Bucharest suburb and not Drobeta. The National Prison Administration (ANP) runs closed institutions for Romania. Start at anp.gov.ro. It will not offer a name search.

Dolj: how this area actually works

The Jiu and the Romanati plain, a big city, and a Bulgarian border to the south. The land is flat. Mehedinți, Gorj, Vâlcea, Olt, and Bulgaria. Dolj is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Dolj.

The car plant, the university, and a regional capital’s services. Craiova is a real city. English is uneven and the file is Romanian. Craiova matters here because it is the county city and penitentiary town.

Put Băilești in the plan for a concrete reason — a southern plain town. Calafat matters here because it is the Danube border town toward Bulgaria. The administrative centre is Craiova. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.

Finding someone held in Dolj

Craiova courts are major for Oltenia. The penitentiary is a separate address. Craiova’s penitentiary serves the region. Confirm it against a transfer to Bucharest or to another Oltenian gate. The plant is not the prison. The National Prison Administration (ANP) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.

A first arrest in Dolj can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. Put Filiași in the plan for a concrete reason — a town north toward the hills.

Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.

Visits and family practicalities

Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Craiova. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.

Flying only to Bucharest and treating Craiova as a same-day add-on. It is a full drive. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Craiova, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Segarcea matters here because it is a wine town south of the city.

Getting around Dolj

The road from Bucharest via Pitești is the long plain route. Clear and tiring. Craiova is a rail city. A genuine option. Craiova Airport has limited flights. Bucharest is the robust door, then the road.

Plain heat. The drive is the fact. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Craiova. Bulgaria is south. GDIN is not ANP.

Questions families actually ask

Can I assume the courthouse in Craiova is the place to visit?
No. Craiova’s penitentiary serves the region. Confirm it against a transfer to Bucharest or to another Oltenian gate. The plant is not the prison. Confirm the institution with the National Prison Administration (ANP) before you travel.
Is there a public inmate list for Dolj?
the National Prison Administration (ANP) does not offer a public name search for Dolj or for Romania as a whole. Use the official contact route on anp.gov.ro, a lawyer, or the court papers you already hold.
Which document matters most at the gate?
Same-day visits are a common failure, especially if you land and still need to reach a gate outside Craiova. Get approval first, then fix the journey.
