Gorj: how this area actually works
The Jiu valley, the edge of the Parâng, and a town on a plain at the mountain mouth. The coal towns are upriver. Hunedoara, Vâlcea, Dolj, Mehedinți, and Caraș-Severin. Gorj is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Gorj.
Energy, the valley, and a county town with a sculptural reputation. The mines and the column are different worlds. Brâncuși draws visitors who will not know the visiting rules. In Gorj, Târgu Jiu is the county town.
Motru is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is a coal town west of the seat. In Gorj, Rovinari is an energy town on the Jiu. The administrative centre is Târgu Jiu. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Gorj
Târgu Jiu courts serve the county. The sculpture park is not a court. Confirm the ANP institution. A valley town and the county seat are easy to confuse, and Craiova is the Oltenian city people substitute. There is no public roster you can query on anp.gov.ro. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Gorj can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. Bumbești-Jiu is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is a town at the mouth of the gorge.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a penitentiary in Gorj. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Visiting the Endless Column as if it were the meeting point, or driving to Craiova by default. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Târgu Jiu, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. In Gorj, Turceni is an energy town east of the city.
Getting around Gorj
The valley road and the road from Craiova. Clear until the mountains. Regional. A car is simpler for the gate. Craiova or Bucharest, then the road.
Valley weather if the institution is upriver. The town itself is ordinary. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Târgu Jiu.
