Maramureș: custody, visits, and how placement works

Maramureș County is the wooden-church north, Baia Mare the mining city, and a border with Ukraine. The churches are the English search. The penitentiary is a Romanian ANP question in and around the city, not in a village churchyard. The National Prison Administration (ANP) runs closed institutions for Romania. Start at anp.gov.ro. It will not offer a name search.

Maramureș: how this area actually works

A basin city, then the Iza and Mara valleys, and a Ukrainian border in the mountains. The tourist Maramureș and the city are different drives. Satu Mare, Sălaj, Cluj, Bistrița-Năsăud, and Suceava. Ukraine north. Maramureș is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Maramureș.

The city’s industry, timber, and tourism in the valleys. Sighetu Marmației is the border town of the tourist north. Wooden churches do not hold prisoners. Ukrainian services do not hold Romanian ones. Baia Mare is the county city and penitentiary town.

People heading for Baia Mare still need Sighetu Marmației on the list: the northern border town. Borșa is the mountain resort at the far east. The administrative centre is Baia Mare. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.

Finding someone held in Maramureș

Baia Mare courts serve the county. Sighet has its own historic weight and its own distance. Baia Mare’s penitentiary is the local ANP name. Sighet’s history is not a current visiting plan unless the order says so. Confirm. The National Prison Administration (ANP) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.

A first arrest in Maramureș can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. People heading for Baia Mare still need Vișeu de Sus on the list: a valley town of the forestry railway.

Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.

Visits and family practicalities

Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Maramureș. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.

Going to a wooden church village, or to Sighet’s memorial, instead of the institution named now. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Baia Mare, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Seini is a town west of Baia Mare.

Getting around Maramureș

The road from Cluj to Baia Mare, then a mountain road if the paper really says the north. Winter splits them. Baia Mare is the rail city. The valleys are not. Cluj or Baia Mare’s limited flights. Then the correct valley, if any.

Snow in the wooden-church country from autumn. Baia Mare itself is easier. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Baia Mare. Ukraine borders the north. Different prisons.
