Olt: custody, visits, and how placement works

Olt County is Slatina, the Olt river city between Bucharest’s south-west and Craiova. It is a plain county with an aluminium works and a habit of being driven through. Treat Olt as the name on the stamp and Olt as the English name of the same county. ANP still decides the gate.

Olt: how this area actually works

The Olt valley and the Romanati plain. Flat, hot, and direct. Argeș, Teleorman, Dolj, and Vâlcea. Olt is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Olt.

Industry and agriculture. Slatina is the city; Caracal is the second town. There is no postcard that should replace the address. Slatina is the county city.

People heading for Slatina still need Caracal on the list: the second town, south of Slatina. Corabia is the Danube town of the county. The administrative centre is Slatina. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.

Finding someone held in Olt

Slatina courts serve the county. Craiova and Pitești are the neighbours. Confirm ANP. Craiova is the Oltenian guess and Pitești the Wallachian one. Either may be wrong. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the National Prison Administration (ANP). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.

A first arrest in Olt can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. People heading for Slatina still need Balș on the list: a town toward the west.

Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.

Visits and family practicalities

Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a penitentiary in Olt. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.

Staying on the road between the two larger cities and never stopping for the institution that is here. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Slatina, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Drăgănești-Olt is a town on the main road.

Getting around Olt

The road from Bucharest via Pitești and the road from Craiova. Both are plain and fast. Slatina and Caracal are on the rail map. Usable. Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport is the usual international door, then a road or rail connection that depends on the institution.

Plain heat. The drive is simple and long enough to miss a morning. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Slatina.

Questions families actually ask

Does an arrest in Olt mean the person stays in Slatina?
No. Confirm ANP. Craiova is the Oltenian guess and Pitești the Wallachian one. Either may be wrong. Confirm the institution with the National Prison Administration (ANP) before you travel.
Is there a public inmate list for Olt?
the National Prison Administration (ANP) does not offer a public name search for Olt or for Romania as a whole. Use the official contact route on anp.gov.ro, a lawyer, or the court papers you already hold.
Can I visit on the day I arrive in Slatina?
Book nothing that you cannot change until the visit is approved and the institution is confirmed. Staying on the road between the two larger cities and never stopping for the institution that is here.
