Sălaj: how this area actually works
Hills, the Someș edge, and a motorway that ignores the old roads. Zalău sits under the Meseș. Bihor, Cluj, Maramureș, and Satu Mare. Sălaj is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Sălaj.
Small industry and a crossroads. There is no large tourist season. The county is a gap in English maps. ANP does not have that gap. Zalău is the county town under the Meseș.
People heading for Zalău still need Șimleu Silvaniei on the list: a western town. Jibou is a town on the Someș. The administrative centre is Zalău. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
When relatives compare notes they often collapse Zalău into “the Sălaj prison”. The more accurate picture is the county town under the Meseș. Use the institution’s own name in every email so staff are not left guessing which gate you mean.
Finding someone held in Sălaj
Zalău courts serve the county. Cluj and Oradea are the cities people substitute. Confirm the institution. Gherla and Oradea are the famous nearby names and may both be wrong. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the National Prison Administration (ANP). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Sălaj can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. People heading for Zalău still need Cehu Silvaniei on the list: a northern town.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a penitentiary in Sălaj. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Staying on the motorway until Cluj because Sălaj did not register. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Zalău, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Meseș is the hills, not an institution.
Getting around Sălaj
The motorway and the older hill roads. The exit is the point. Secondary. The road is the plan. Cluj or Oradea.
Hill fog. The motorway is the reliable piece. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Zalău.
