Sibiu: how this area actually works
A basin city, the Olt valley, and the Cindrel edge. The county is more than the square. Alba, Mureș, Brașov, Argeș, and Vâlcea. Sibiu is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Sibiu.
Industry, tourism, and a city that knows how to receive foreigners. The prison does not run on that hospitality. English is good in the centre. ANP procedure is still the procedure. People heading for Sibiu still need Sibiu on the list: the county city.
Mediaș is the second Saxon town, down the Târnava. People heading for Sibiu still need Cisnădie on the list: a town under the mountains south of Sibiu. The administrative centre is Sibiu. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Sibiu
Sibiu courts serve the county. The evangelical cathedral is not a courthouse for your purposes. Sibiu’s penitentiary is the local name to confirm. Brașov and Alba Iulia’s Aiud are the other Transylvanian guesses. The old town is not the gate. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Romania does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Sibiu can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. ANP assigns penitentiaries nationally. Rahova is in Bucharest; Jilava is in Ilfov. A județ of arrest is the paperwork, not a promise of the cell. Avrig is a town on the Olt toward the east.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the National Prison Administration (ANP), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Vizite are arranged with the named penitenciar under ANP rules. Approval and a matching identity document come before the journey. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a penitentiary in Sibiu. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Wandering the squares because the county is Sibiu, without an address. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Sibiu, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Sibiu still need Săliște on the list: a Mărginimea town, not a prison.
Getting around Sibiu
The motorway along the Olt and the road to Brașov. The city ring is the last delay. Sibiu is a rail city, slightly awkward, and real. Sibiu Airport is a genuine international door. Use it if the institution is actually here.
Basin fog and festival crowds. The airport helps only after the gate is confirmed. Save the gate address in Romanian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Sibiu.
