Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: how this area actually works
Lyon-Corbas replaced older city rumour about a single 'Lyon prison'. It takes remand from Lyon's tribunals and sits south-east of the centre, a bus or tram-plus-walk rather than a stroll from Part-Dieu. Grenoble-Varces serves the Alpine east. Saint-Étienne and Saint-Quentin-Fallavier sit in the industrial belt. Roanne is a Loire-side name inside this région, not a Loire-Atlantique one. Clermont-Ferrand and the former Auvergne are the western half, easy to forget if you only fly into Lyon-Saint-Exupéry. Annecy and Chambéry add court towns whose prisoners are not automatically in Corbas. Clermont-Ferrand is the Auvergne side, not a Lyon tram.
A prévenu's visits can depend on the juge d'instruction. A sentenced person's permis de visite goes through the établissement. Centres de détention and maisons d'arrêt in this région do not share one regime. Winter roads toward Grenoble and the Savoie are a placement fact as well as a travel fact: the DAP does not move someone to suit a family's weekend. Transfers to Île-de-France or to PACA happen. The letter, not the TGV you already booked to Lyon, is the address. Grenoble in winter is not a Lyon afternoon, and Annecy is another court town.
This page groups prisons recorded as Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It does not list people at Corbas, Varces or Clermont-Ferrand. GENESIS remains an internal ministry system. SPIP in Lyon or Grenoble is probation, not a parloir. Read the justice.gouv.fr family pages and the notice for the named house. Do not reuse a Fleury-Mérogis routine because both are grandes maisons d'arrêt. They are different régions. Corbas, Varces, Roanne and Clermont-Ferrand each publish their own notice. A ski weekend in Chambery is not a visit. Saint-Quentin-Fallavier is a fifth address. Read the Lyon notice as well.
Finding someone held in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Nobody can browse who is held at Lyon-Corbas, Grenoble-Varces, Roanne or Clermont-Ferrand. Ask the lawyer or the greffe, and use the official family route on justice.gouv.fr. GENESIS is not a public login. A remand from Lyon's tribunal judiciaire may not be at Corbas the same afternoon. Police custody is not the maison d'arrêt. Do not phone the south-Lyon gate and ask for a name to be read out. Corbas will not confirm a stranger, and Varces will not either. Wait for the greffe.
Corbas is not Varces, and Saint-Étienne is not Clermont-Ferrand. Saint-Quentin-Fallavier is not Part-Dieu. If papers later name Fleury-Mérogis, Marseille or Dijon, you have left this région. A permis de visite names one établissement. It is not a search engine for the Alps or the Auvergne. Corbas, Grenoble-Varces, Roanne, Saint-Etienne and Clermont-Ferrand are five bookings. Annecy and Chambery are not automatic gates. Match the town before you leave Part-Dieu. Saint-Etienne is not that station, and Roanne is not Grenoble. Check the letter.
Visits and family practicalities
Book only after the permis is actually issued for that house. Remand and sentenced regimes differ, and Corbas does not share a calendar with Grenoble-Varces. This page does not invent hours for Lyon or Clermont-Ferrand. Read the notice the morning you travel.
Identification is checked at the parloir. Phones stay outside. Snow on the A48 or a late TER from Lyon will not extend a slot at Varces. If the person moved overnight, the old permit fails. Re-check before you leave Part-Dieu or the Saint-Étienne station.
Getting around Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry and Part-Dieu are the regional hub. Corbas is south-east of the city, not a walk from the station concourse. Grenoble uses the A480 with a snow buffer. Clermont-Ferrand is a separate rail spine through the Auvergne. Annecy and Chambéry look close on a ski map and are still the wrong town unless the letter says so.
Drivers crossing from Geneva or Turin should leave the border and the last French mile as two problems. Parking at Corbas is limited. Use the official address. Do not finish at the Lyon courts on the Presqu'île and call that a visit.
