Île-de-France: how this area actually works
Fleury-Mérogis, in Essonne, is the vast maison d'arrêt people mean when Paris-region courts overflow. It is a southern RER-and-bus trip, not a walk from the Île de la Cité. Fresnes sits in Val-de-Marne. La Santé is in the 14th arrondissement, a city prison with its own approach from the Port-Royal side, not a synonym for every remand in the capitale. Nanterre, Villepinte, Osny and Meaux-Chauconin take other slices of the same région. Women's houses that serve Paris courts are separate bookings again. Treating the region as a single building is how families miss a morning slot.
The Direction de l'administration pénitentiaire runs the establishments. GENESIS is the internal file. It is not a website relatives can search. A prévenu, still before judgment, often needs the juge d'instruction to authorise a visit. A condamné's permis de visite usually runs through the chef d'établissement. Those are different paperwork trails inside the same région. A person remanded from Bobigny, Créteil or Versailles can be at Fleury one week and elsewhere in the région, or outside it, the next. The greffe and the lawyer know before a group chat does.
This page groups prisons recorded as Île-de-France. It does not list who is at Fleury, Fresnes, La Santé or Villepinte. Overcrowding reports from the Contrôleur général discuss conditions, not a daily roll. SPIP handles probation in the community, which is not a prison visit. Read justice.gouv.fr for families of detained people, then the notice for the établissement named in the letter. Do not copy a Lyon or Marseille timetable onto an Essonne address. Bobigny, Creteil and Versailles are three court towns, and none of them is the Fleury gate. Check the letter twice.
Finding someone held in Île-de-France
France does not authorise a public inmate database, and Île-de-France is not an exception. You cannot Google who is in Fleury-Mérogis, Fresnes or La Santé. Location is confirmed through the lawyer, the greffe, or the official family guidance on justice.gouv.fr. GENESIS stays inside the ministry. A same-day remand from a Paris tribunal may still be in transit or in a police cell, which is not the maison d'arrêt. Do not ring a gate in Essonne and expect a name. Fresnes will not read a name either.
Match the établissement. Fleury is not Fresnes, and La Santé is not Nanterre or Villepinte. Osny and Meaux-Chauconin are still the région and still different journeys. If the letter later names a maison in Lyon, Lille or Marseille, this page is the wrong travel plan. A permis de visite for one house does not locate someone. It only becomes useful after you already know the gate. Nanterre, Osny, Villepinte and Meaux-Chauconin are still separate journeys. Match each one. Do not guess a gate.
Visits and family practicalities
Social visits need a permis de visite. On remand, the juge d'instruction may control the first permissions. Session patterns differ between Fleury, Fresnes and La Santé, and this guide does not invent them. Read the live notice before you travel from CDG, Orly or a banlieue station.
Bring the identification the établissement lists. Phones stay out of the parloir. A permit for Villepinte will not admit you to Fleury if the person moved. Re-check the house before you buy an RER ticket to the south of the région or a metro ride toward the 14th.
Getting around Île-de-France
CDG and Orly are in the région, which helps international families and still leaves a long ground leg. Fleury-Mérogis eats a morning once you leave the RER. Fresnes is Val-de-Marne bus geography. La Santé is a city walk after Port-Royal or Saint-Jacques, with waiting rooms that fill. Use the address on the official notice, not a pin labelled simply 'Paris prison'.
Drivers on the périphérique and the A6 should assume the last kilometre is slower than the map. Parking near urban maisons d'arrêt is poor. Versailles and Meaux are not central Paris trips. If the confirmed house is Osny or Meaux-Chauconin, do not finish the day at Châtelet.
