Brittany: how this area actually works
Rennes is the regional capital and the prison name on most family searches, including the historic role of the women's centrale and the local maison that people still blur together. They are not one booking. Brest, at the end of Finistère, is a different day. Saint-Brieuc, Vannes, Lorient and Quimper hold smaller local stories and long TER rides. Saint-Malo's ferry traffic is not a prison gate. The peninsula's shape punishes a same-day return from Paris Montparnasse. A Brest remand is not a Rennes visit just because both are Bretagne. Vannes and Lorient are a south-coast line, not the Rennes gate.
Pays de la Loire begins at Nantes. Autocomplete loves that mistake. A Loire-Atlantique court is not a Rennes file, and a Rennes permis will not open a Nantes gate. Inside Brittany, the DAP can still move someone from a local maison to a centre de détention elsewhere in France. Prévenus often need the juge d'instruction. Condamnés need the établissement's permis de visite. Island and coastal communities in Morbihan do not have a separate prison service. Saint-Brieuc and Quimper are further local journeys on the peninsula. Lorient is another south-coast stop.
This page groups prisons recorded as Brittany. It does not list people in Rennes or Brest. GENESIS stays inside the ministry. Read justice.gouv.fr and the notice for the named house. Do not copy an Île-de-France parloir time onto a Finistère address, and do not treat the TGV arrival at Rennes as the gate. Brest, Vannes and Saint-Malo are three more plans, and Saint-Malo's ferry is not a parloir. Quimper, Saint-Brieuc and Lorient each need their own letter. Budget a night in Brest. Vannes is not Rennes. Read the Breton notice.
Finding someone held in Brittany
Brittany publishes no prisoner roll for Rennes, Brest, Vannes or Saint-Brieuc. Ask the lawyer or the greffe. GENESIS is internal. justice.gouv.fr explains the family route and does not list names. A morning hearing in Rennes may still leave the person in police custody. Do not phone the Rennes maison and ask for a name. A text from Quimper is not a location. The Rennes maison will not confirm a stranger's name. Brest will not either, so wait. Ask the greffe.
Match the town. Rennes is not Brest. Vannes is not Lorient. If the paperwork says Nantes or Angers, you are in Pays de la Loire. If it says Fleury-Mérogis, you are in Essonne. A permis de visite names one établissement on the peninsula or elsewhere. It is not a directory of Bretagne. Saint-Brieuc, Lorient and Quimper are separate from both Rennes and Brest. Match the town on the letter. Confirm Brest against Rennes before you buy today's TGV ticket home.
Visits and family practicalities
Each Breton établissement sets its own visit rules on top of the national permis. Remand can require the juge d'instruction. This guide does not invent hours for Rennes or Brest. Read the notice before you leave Montparnasse.
Bring the identification required. Phones stay outside. A Rennes permit will not admit you in Brest. If the person moved east toward Paris, the Brittany plan is over. Re-check before you commit to the four-hour TGV or a drive to Finistère.
Getting around Brittany
TGV Atlantique from Paris Montparnasse reaches Rennes, and slower trains continue to Brest, Quimper and Saint-Brieuc. The Rennes maison is a city-edge trip, not the gare. Brest is the end of the line and often an overnight if the parloir is early. Vannes and Lorient sit on the south coast line.
Drivers use the N164 and the coastal roads, then a last mile the map shrinks. Summer traffic to the Morbihan and winter rain in Finistère both wipe out a tight slot. Ferries into Roscoff or Saint-Malo are not the prison. Use the official address. Do not navigate to Nantes because the station screens look similar.
