Baranya County: how this area actually works
The Mecsek hills stand over Pécs. South, the land drops to the Drava and the Croatian border; east it opens toward the Danube at Mohács. Tolna and Bács-Kiskun lie north and east. Croatia is the southern border. Somogy is west. Baranya vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Baranya County.
The university, the hospital, and light industry in Pécs, with wine and smaller towns in the Villány direction. Croatian and German echoes in local history do not change the language of a BV form. Pécs matters here because it is the county seat under the Mecsek, university city and BV town.
Put Mohács in the plan for a concrete reason — the Danube town remembered for 1526 and still a border-area district centre. Villány matters here because it is the southern wine town, a poor guess for a gate. The administrative centre is Pécs. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Baranya County
The county court is in Pécs. Mohács and smaller towns have their own district life. Pécs has a BV institution serving Baranya. High-security or long sentences can move to Szeged or another national intézet. The Mecsek view is not a locator. The Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.
A first arrest in Baranya County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. BV moves people between intézetek for security, sentence type, and space. A Budapest arrest is not a promise of a Budapest cell, and Szeged is not only a Csongrád story. Put Komló in the plan for a concrete reason — the former mining town in the hills north-east of Pécs.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Látogatás is arranged with the named intézet on bv.gov.hu, in Hungarian. Bring a passport or national ID that matches the visitor approval exactly. A photo on a phone is not an identity document at a prison in Baranya County. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Day-tripping from Osijek or from Villány wine roads and arriving at the university district instead of the gate. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Pécs, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Szigetvár matters here because it is the western fortress town of the county.
Getting around Baranya County
The M6 motorway links Budapest toward the county. The last stretch into Pécs is ordinary dual carriageway and city traffic. Pécs is a rail terminus from the Budapest direction. Cross-border hops are not a prison shuttle. Budapest, or sometimes Osijek from the Croatian side, then a road that still needs a confirmed address.
Summer festivals in Pécs fill rooms. Book the visit first, the hotel second. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Pécs.
